Google announced today that Voice Search for Android, not to be confused with the Google Now-like iOS app of the same name, now supports 13 additional languages. That brings the total number of languages supported to 42.
Voice Search, which powers voice-activated commands for tasks like sending messages or searching the web, has expanded to include the following languages:
Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Finnish, Galician, Hungarian, Icelandic, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Sweden
Adding the new languages was no small task. After spending a great deal of time recording native speakers uttering words and building a machine to predict pronunciation, Google finally managed to tackle languages like Swedish. The accuracy of the machine will improve over time as native speakers begin to use the app and send data that allows Google to refine its voice recognition software.
