Ontario Selects Four Apprentice Coaches For 2013 Canada Summer Games

The OCA is pleased to announce that Ottawas Jenny Trew will working closely with the OCA?in the lead up to the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QC. Jenny will work closely with some of Ontarios best young female athletes overthe next 18 months.

Aboriginal Sport and Wellness Council of Ontario, the Ontario Softball Association, the Ontario Canoe Sprint Racing Affiliation and the Ontario Cycling Association are pleased to announce the appointment of four Ontario Apprentice Coaches for the 2013 Canada Summer Games Coaching Apprentice Program.

Ottawa?s Apprentice Coaches, Jenny Trew (Cycling) and Helen Orton (Canoe Kayak) have been selected for the Women Apprentice program. Both coaches were former high performance athletes with aspirations of making a coaching a full-time career.??

Ohsweken Apprentice Coaches, Tiffany Van Every (Canoe Kayak) and Kathryn Hill(Softball) have been identified for the Aboriginal Apprentice program. Tiffany and Kathryn are the first Aboriginal Apprentices to represent Ontario at a Canada Games thanks to the support of the Aboriginal Sport and Wellness Council of Ontario.

?All four apprentices were chosen to represent Ontario in the national program based on their potential leadership, commitment to progressing their coaching careers and the outstanding support and development plan from the provincial sport organization.

??The OCSRA is in need of young female coaches like Helen and Tiffany who have the potential to develop into excellent high-performance coaches. We believe that this program will be a great next step in their development pathway and will have a significant impact in our sport.? Joel ?Hazzan, Ontario Canoe and Kayak Team Head Coach.

The purpose of Canada Games Coaching Apprentice program is to provide aboriginal and women coaches from across Canada with practical and integrated multisport games experience. The four selected coaches will receive support and guidance from their Provincial Sport Organization and from an identified mentor coach throughout the duration of the program. These apprentices will also have the opportunity to complete their NCCP Competition Development Certification as a part of the program.

The Canada Games Apprentice Program provided has been involved with every Canada Games since 2005. This national program is supported by the Canada Games Council, the Coaching Association of Canada, the Aboriginal Sport Circle, the Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representatives, and the Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Bodies.

The Coaches Association of Ontario is a non-profit coach-led organization that strengthens development opportunities and provides educational resources for coaches.?? The CAO promotes coaching ethics and ensures the wider community recognizes the vital role of the coach in the development of sport at all levels.

ASWCO is a collective of Aboriginal sport, recreation and physical activity leaders and is recognized as the mandated Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Body (P/TASB). ASWCO?s mission is to ?Enhance the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, cultural and social well-being of Aboriginal peoples of Ontario through physical activity, recreation and sports activities.
