Checking your belts every few months is a good idea. They are simple rubber pieces, so they tend to fall apart sooner or later. They can become slick, slack or just crack and fall apart. When any of this occurs, the parts that are running off them do no receive the energy they need. This leads to strain. If the part, such as a water pump, is critical to the engine performance, it can lead to catastrophic failure. We really dont want that to happen!

Checking your belts is simple. Youll need a pair of eyes and a screwdriver. The first test is to visually observe the belts. Cracks mean the belt needs to be replaced. If you see a slick appearance, run your fingers over the belts. If there is an oily feel or your fingers show oil, the belts need to be replaced. Slick belts will not do their job efficiently. If everything looks okay, give each belt a minor tug by putting the screwdriver under it and pulling up. The belt should be tight with very little play. If it has more than this, you can try adjusting it at the connection to the water pump or whatever part it runs to. Replace it if that doesnt work.

Some modern cars are designed pursuant to a contest wherein designers attempt to cram everything and the kitchen sink into the engine department. One of many downsides is that you cant see the belts or cant access them. In such a case, have a mechanic take a look at them whenever you are in for some other reason. You can never go wrong with new belts. They are cheap, so dont be hesitant to change them.
