The bomb targeting the policewomen was planted on a motorbike parked on a road leading to the airport in Herat, said Sayd Sharif Mohammadi, the police commander for the airport. When five Afghan policewomen rode by in their vehicle, the remote-controlled device was detonated, killing one policewoman and two civilians.

Mohammadi said the explosion also wounded 10 people ? the other four female police officers riding in the police vehicle, its driver and five civilians who were near the blast.
