Video: Open-ended vacation policies a good idea?

>> and in need of a vacation. maryland-based company is offering a unique perk. unlimited vacation. wedding wire writes on the website, we want you to have a life so our vacation policy is simple. take what you need. can you believe that? joining us with more is the director of rule an resources, jenny harding. i was reading your website and thinking this has to be a typo unless you can say i can take six months off. it's natural that you would make that leap. a lot of people have. the policy is like any other vacation policy out there. you still have to make sure you get your job done and have to schedule the time with your supervisor. it works the same, you just don't have this bucket of time that you have to draw your time from.

>> what have you found? have your employees taken advantage of this policy or are they away more than they were before?

>> we have only started to institute it as of minute or tuesday when we get back to the office. 2012 will be the launch time. we slowly let ourselves get to this place. in 2011 at the beginning of the year, we granted the entire year's worth of vacation time to all of our employees at the beginning of the year.

>> where do you draw the line? when they sit down and say i would like to take off six months as i was saying earlier, how are you going to say no, you can't do that?

>> the crux of it is, the way our business works, we have highly collaborative teams of employees and the absence of a six-month period of time would prevent from you being able to get your job done. at the same time we don't want to be able to say you can't take three weeks off for the honeymoon in june and not have time off around the holidays to spend with your newlywed.

>> why did you start this? it sounds like something out of california from the dot-comes out there. did you think you might have more output?

>> there is that obviously. we want to have a happy employee and because they are more productive. we are competing for the talent in this area and we want to attract world class talent to the business. if this means somebody might relocate to the washington area to work for a bethesda-based company, we would love to be competitive. in that same market with the dot-comes.

>> they have the restaurants and all the valet services and the cars and the masseuses. they also may be looking at the study. we were looking into this. expedia put out a study that shows how much vacation folks are taking around the world. you can see our european breath ren get almost twice as much as we do, although we get less here, we don't take it all.

>> that's true.

>> that is something we found giving vacation at the beginning of the year, people ended up with big balances at the end of the year. not only --

>> why?

>> i think that for one, people work differently. at least in our company. if you are going to be going to the dentist through the day, you are not counting that against your vacation because you work later when you get back or make it up during the week. people weren't taking vacation time as much to do errands and to schedule with their spouses. we already had a flexible work schedule. the chunks of time that people weren't taking to be away, we were a smaller company and everybody has big responsibilities.

LAKEWOOD, Wash. - The 'FISH' food bank in Lakewood says its seeing a large increase in the number of military families in need of help. Coordinators at the food bank, which is three miles from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, say the increase is coming from families who live on and off post.

"It's surprising," says Marcus Stoll, coordinator of the food bank in Lakewood. "I'll do whatever I can to help my soldiers."

Between 120 and 180 families line up to use the food bank three days per week. Stoll estimates 15-20 percent are now military families. He says more soldiers are returning home and saying their dollar doesn't stretch as far as it used to.

"I don't have a dollar to my name," says Frances Anderson. Her husband is active duty at JBLM but says she needs the food bank once a week to feed the two of them and their son.

"My husband is embarrassed because he doesn't feel that we should have to be here," she says. "The economy is terrible. I just tell the people on post that I need help and they just look at me like I'm crazy."

JBLM offers a housing allowance to families who live off post and offer programs to help those who are going through tough financial times.?

Stoll says overall demand in Lakewood is up about 90 percent.

FISH Food Banks of Pierce County have seen a slight increase in donations but because demand is so high, they are having a tough time keeping up.

How to dual-boot Chakra Linux Edn and Windows 7, part 1

Chakra Linux is one of the most promising desktop distributions of 2011. It was on my list of the top 6 KDE distributions of 2011. Will it continue to improve in 2012? You never know, but everything about the distribution is pointing in the right direction. Like Pardus, which also made that list, it is purely a KDE-based distribution. The latest edition, released on December 18 2011, is Chakra Edn 2011.12 (see Chakra GNU/Linux Edn 2011.12 review).

In this article, all the step required to dual-boot this distribution (the latest editions and previous releases too) and Windows 7, are presented in an easy to follow manner. So that at the end, you should have a boot menu that looks just like the one below ? when you (re)boot your computer.
Chakra Edn Windows 7 dual-Boot BURG Menu

Because Tribe, Chakra?s installation program, is not capable of auto-partitioning a disk, any attempt to install the system, standalone or dual-boot, requires creating partitions manually. If you are using Chakra, want to use this tutorial to dual-boot it and Windows 7, and disk partitioning in Linux is a new area for you, Guide to disks and disk partitions in Linux is a recommended read. And for some tips on dual-booting Linux distributions and Windows, you might also want to read tips for dual-booting Windows and Linux.

If you are going to attempt this dual-boot operation, you probably are going to use a computer with an existing installation of Windows 7, or you want to install a fresh copy of Windows 7. Because of Tribe?s inability to auto-partition a disk, it is recommended that you create an unformatted disk space to use for the installation, if you are going to install a fresh copy of Windows 7. Or recover enough space to install Chakra, from an existing installation of Windows 7. This tutorial starts with instructions for freeing up space from an existing Windows 7 installation, followed by steps for installing it anew, then continuing with steps for installing Chakra on the same hard drive. Before you get started, be sure to download the latest edition of Chakra from here.

Recover Disk Space From An Existing Installation of Windows 7: The steps to recover disk space from an existing installation of Windows 7 are pretty simple. That, however, depends on whether this is recoverable space. If there is, the first step is to start Windows 7 Partition Manager. From the menu?s search box, type ?Partitions.? Then, click on the search result. Note: From this point on, use the position of the mouse cursor on an image as an indicator of where to click.
Using Windows 7's Menu Search

That should open the partition manager. Right click on the C drive and select ?Shrink Volume.?
Windows 7 Partition Manager

If there is enough free space on the disk, the partition manager will tend to free up half of the total disk space. If you know that you can free up more space than suggested, change the value shown in the ?Enter the amount of space ?? box. Click Shrink.
Windows 7 Shrink Partition

That will bring you back to the main window of the partition manager. The recovered space should be shown right next to what is now left of the C drive. Close the window, and restart the computer. Be sure to first place the copy of Chakra?s CD or DVD installation disc in the optical drive. If you have got that, proceed to the section on installing Chakra. That is on page two of this article.
Windows 7 Free Disk Space

Install Windows 7 Anew: If you would rather install a fresh copy of Windows 7, these are the steps you need to follow: First, boot the computer using Windows 7?s installation CD or DVD. Then Click through the first few steps until you get to the one shown in the image below. The available disk will be shown. You will have to specify the amount of disk space to use for Windows 7. The system used for this tutorial has a disk space of 1 TB, and I assigned half to Windows 7, half to Chakra. You decide how you want to allocate the space on your computer. To start, click on Drive options (advanced).
Windows 7 Hard Drive

Then on New.
Windows 7 New Partition

The available disk space will be shown in the Size box. Change it to reflect how much space you want to assign to Windows 7.
Windows 7 New Partition Size

Here is what I did for the system used for this tutorial. Click Apply. After the installer has created the partitions, click on Next to continue with the rest of the installation.
Windows 7 Format Partition

After installation has completed, reboot the computer, but not before placing the installation CD or DVD of Chakra that you made earlier. If you transferred the installation image to a USB flash drive instead, insert it in to a USB port. Proceed to the next section.

California to explore online sales of lottery tickets

Reporting from Washington?

The inexorable push to sell almost everything online could soon include lottery tickets.

Officials at the California State Lottery said they will explore selling tickets over the Internet after the Justice Department determined that such sales would not violate federal law.

"It does open up a major potential channel for lottery sales in California, but right now it's just a potential channel," Robert O'Neill, who was named last week to head the state lottery, said Tuesday.

State lottery officials will review the Justice Department's legal opinion, which allows states to sell lottery tickets over the Internet and possibly to offer poker and other types of online gambling. The opinion clarified that a 40-year-old law, known as the Federal Wire Act, applies only to sports betting, not to other online gambling that states may permit.

O'Neill said that the California lottery would not consider online poker at this point. "Internet poker's a whole other discussion," he said.

He didn't say when the lottery would make a decision.

The Justice Department's latest interpretation of federal law could be a boon for states looking to expand their lotteries as a way to help close large budget deficits, said I. Nelson Rose, a professor at Whittier Law School and author of the blog Gambling and the Law.

He predicted that most states would be offering online gambling within a decade.

"It undoes the single obstacle that was preventing the states from authorizing all forms of Internet gambling," Rose said of the new legal opinion, which appears only to rule out sports betting. "I think we're going to see an explosion in the next couple of years."

Assistant U.S. Atty. Gen. Virginia A. Seitz said in a 13-page legal opinion quietly released last week that proposals from state lotteries in Illinois and New York to sell online tickets to adult residents would not violate the 1961 Federal Wire Act.

State-run online lotteries also would not violate a controversial 2006 law, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which has been used to crack down on foreign online poker sites. That law seeks to prevent people from circumventing existing state or federal anti-gambling laws, but it allows Internet gambling within a state if it is legal there.

The law helped pave the way for the Justice Department opinion because it specifically said that online bets could be routed through servers or transaction processors in other states as long as the person making the wager was in the state where gambling was allowed.

The Wire Act prohibits interstate transmission of gambling-related communications. But Seitz determined that Congress passed that act 40 years ago to stop sports gambling, and the transmission of other types of gambling wagers would be legal.

"This is a perfect ... progression for any lottery because it's adapting to new consumer buying habits and new technologies," said Michael Jones, superintendent of the Illinois Lottery.

Many more people would buy tickets if they could do so online shortly before the drawing for large jackpots, such as the multistate Mega Millions or Powerball lotteries, Jones said.

From 8% to 12% of adults play the lottery in Illinois at least once a week, but 80% of adults said they were in favor of the lottery, he said. The number of players could be expanded by 200,000 to 400,000 if online ticket sales were allowed, generating more than $100 million a year in additional revenue for Illinois.

"The whole idea of a lottery is to get a lot of people to play a little, not a few people to play a lot," Jones said. "There is this enormous potential marketplace."

Illinois enacted a law two years ago mandating the lottery undertake a three- to four-year pilot program testing online sales of tickets to existing state lottery games. As part of the law, the Illinois Legislature required state officials to seek a legal opinion from the Justice Department.

The New York Lottery, which also wants to offer online ticket sales, made a similar request.

The Nevada State Gaming Control Board, which has been studying online gambling, last week approved regulations to allow Internet poker. The District of Columbia Lottery also is moving ahead with plans to offer Internet poker.

California State Lottery's O'Neill said the security of online ticket sales is the main concern.

"Before we even step into any venture like that, we'd have to be very certain about the integrity of the system to perform," he said.

Jones said the Internet offers the ability to limit how much money someone spends on the lottery.

"Right now, I can't stop someone from going down to a brick-and-mortar retailer and spending $1,000 on Mega Millions tonight," he said.

But online registration and credit card tracking would allow the Illinois Lottery to intervene if somebody did that over the Internet, Jones said.

He expects Illinois to start selling online lottery tickets this spring.

Matt Richardson turns Arduino, Twitter and lasers into art (video)

Fade Away 1
Matt Richardson's genius has never really been in question. The Make Live host and compulsive hacker has built an impressive library of creations, ranging from a Google Reader pedal to an email-triggered Christmas tree. The man's works are definitely art, in their own way, but his new project, Fade Away 1, is the first that we could easily see taking up residence in a SoHo gallery. At the heart of the installation is an Arduino (of course) that pulls in posts from Twitter with the phrase "fade away" in them. The same AVR chip then "prints" those tweets on phosphorescent paper with a UV laser mounted on a servo -- as the energy dissipates, the messages slowly disappear. And, if you're wondering what the "1" at the end of the title means, Richardson plans to continuously improve the project. For some more details about the next iteration and to see the current one in action, check out the videos after the break.

'Rare' brain disorder may be more common than thought, say Mayo Clinic scientists

ScienceDaily (Dec. 25, 2011) ? A global team of neuroscientists, led by researchers at Mayo Clinic in Florida, has found the gene responsible for a brain disorder that may be much more common than once believed. In the Dec. 25 online issue of Nature Genetics, the researchers say they identified 14 different mutations in the gene CSF1R that lead to development of hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids (HDLS). This is a devastating disorder of the brain's white matter that leads to death between ages 40 and 60. People who inherit the abnormal gene always develop HDLS. Until now, a definite diagnosis of HDLS required examination of brain tissue at biopsy or autopsy.

The finding is important because the researchers suspect that HDLS is more common than once thought and a genetic diagnosis will now be possible without need for a brain biopsy or autopsy. According to the study's senior investigator, neurologist Zbigniew K. Wszolek, M.D., a significant number of people who tested positive for the abnormal gene in this study had been diagnosed with a wide range of other conditions. These individuals were related to a patient known to have HDLS, and so their genes were also examined.

"Because the symptoms of HDLS vary so widely -- everything from behavior and personality changes to seizures and movement problems -- these patients were misdiagnosed as having either schizophrenia, epilepsy, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, or other disorders," says Dr. Wszolek. "Many of these patients were therefore treated with drugs that offered only toxic side effects.

"Given this finding, we may soon have a blood test that can help doctors diagnose HDLS, and I predict we will find it is much more common than anyone could have imagined," he says.

Dr. Wszolek is internationally known for his long-term efforts to bring together researchers from around the world to help find cases of inherited brain disorders and discover their genetic roots.

Dr. Wszolek's interest in HDLS began when a severely disabled young woman came to see him in 2003 and mentioned that other members of her family were affected. The diagnosis of HDLS was made by his Mayo Clinic colleague, Dennis W. Dickson, M.D., who reviewed the autopsy findings of the patient's uncle, who had previously been misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis, and subsequently, Dr. Wszolek's patient and her father. All members of the family had HDLS.

Dr. Dickson had identified other cases of HDLS from Florida, New York, Oregon and Kansas in the Mayo Clinic Florida brain bank and knew of a large kindred in Virginia with similar pathology, based upon a presentation at the annual meeting of the American Association of Neuropathologists. With concerted efforts, Dr. Wszolek and collaborators at University of Virginia were able to obtain DNA samples from the Virginia kindred. Dr. Wszolek also sought other cases, particularly those that had been reported in the neuropathology literature, and he was able to obtain samples from Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada, and other sites in the U.S. He and his team of investigators and collaborators have since published studies describing the clinical, pathologic and imaging characteristics of the disorder, and they have held five international meetings on HDLS.

In this study, which included 38 researchers from 12 institutions in five countries, the study's first author, Rosa Rademakers, Ph.D., led the effort to find the gene responsible for HDLS. Her laboratory studied DNA samples from 14 families in which at least one member was diagnosed with HDLS and compared these with samples from more than 2,000 disease-free participants. The gene was ultimately found using a combination of traditional genetic linkage studies and recently developed state-of-the art sequencing methods. Most family members studied -- who were found to have HDLS gene mutations -- were not diagnosed with the disease, but with something else, thus emphasizing the notion that HDLS is an underdiagnosed disorder.

The CSF1R protein is an important receptor in the brain that is primarily present in microglia, the immune cells of the brain. "We identified a different CSF1R mutation in every HDLS family that we studied," says Dr. Rademakers. "All mutations are located in the kinase domain of CSF1R, which is critical for its activity, suggesting that these mutations may lead to deficient microglia activity. How this leads to white matter pathology in HDLS patients is not yet understood, but we now have an important lead to study."

"With no other disease have we found so many affected families so quickly," says Dr. Wszolek. "That tells me this disease is not rare, but quite common." He adds, "It is fantastic that you can start an investigation with a single case and end up, with the help of many hands, in what we believe to be a world-class gene discovery."

The study was funded by a Mayo benefactor and the Mayo Foundation. Additionally, Mayo Clinic in Florida is a Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Disease Research Center of Excellence supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Project To Mainline Android Kernel Changes Formed

As has been repeatedly reported, Linus is fine with someone taking a version of the Linux kernel and forking it off in their own special direction, as the Android developers have done. If you want to put some of the those features back into his main line, though, they will have to meet his standards, and those of the people he has trusted to manage the kernel changes. If the Android developers' changes were acceptable, they would already have been merged.

"wakelocks", for example, are a kludge to cover up some very lax user-space coding standards, and are not acceptable.

There is a lot of recent work (not really finished, IMO) to handle micromanaging power consumption for System on Chip (SoC), battery-powered devices, both in the kernel itself and through controlling userspace. If Android developers want to be using the mainstream kernel, they should be preparing to use the new interfaces and tools, while helping to find any real issues, rather than whining "why won't you just do it our way?".

My contribution to the Linux kernel is incredibly minor, but it had to go through exactly the same vetting process, and the result was a better change.

Samsung, You?re Doing It Wrong With Android 4.0

By Kevin C. Tofel

The No. 2 bestselling Samsung smartphone in history won?t officially see an upgrade to Android 4.0, leaving owners to decide among buying a newer phone, sticking with Android 2.3, or hacking on a custom build of Google?s latest mobile operating system. The reason Samsung won?t be offering such an upgrade? According to Samsung Tomorrow by way of the Verge, Samsung?s own customized TouchWiz user interface is the answer, which sounds more like a lame excuse than a valid explanation.

Samsung?s Galaxy Tab?a 7-in. slate I?ve been using daily for more than a year now?is also on the ?won?t see Android 4.0? list, says the Samsung Tomorrow blog. I can understand we?re looking at a smartphone and a tablet that made their debut in 2010, and there?s a limited shelf life for future updates on mobile devices. What I don?t understand, nor accept, is that the issue is Samsung?s user interface software. Even worse, I think Samsung is shooting itself in the foot. Here?s why.

You have to treat current customers well. On the one hand, I can see Samsung?s stance if it chooses not to bring Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) to these older devices. From a financial standpoint, those handsets and tablets are already sold, and Samsung has earned all the income it?s going to from the sale of such devices. To bring Android 4.0 to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab, the company would have to invest time, effort, and money to deliver the software. It has no financial incentive to do so. But customers don?t care about that and could decide to buy a competing product if they feel slighted.

Software add-ons should never stop product advances. Some people like TouchWiz, and some don?t. The same could be said for HTC?s Sense. Both are user interface add-ons atop Google Android, and neither should be the primary cause of stopping an Android update. HTC once fell into this same trap with Gingerbread on its Desire handset and eventually compromised by removing some custom apps to make room for the update.

This isn?t a technical issue, it?s a bad decision. My first thought about this situation was that perhaps the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab didn?t have the horsepower to run Android 4.0. Yet the Nexus S, made by Samsung, will get the ICS software, and it has very similar specifications to the Galaxy S in terms of memory, storage capacity, and processor. And I?m willing to bet the Android enthusiast community will have a custom build of Android 4.0 for both devices, if it doesn?t already. How sad is it that external developers can make this happen, when Samsung can?t?

Will most people who own a Samsung Galaxy S or Galaxy Tab be in an uproar over this? Probably not, as they?ll likely never know about Samsung?s decision, nor will they be thinking about Android 4.0 for devices that are 18 months old. But the decision sets a bad precedent and suggests that Samsung is more concerned with selling newer hardware than supporting existing customers and their current devices.

My suggestion would be a compromise of sorts: Offer a stock version of Android 4.0 for these devices with the customer understanding and accepting the fact that the TouchWiz interface will no longer be available after the upgrade. Unless there?s a real technical reason for the lack of an Android 4.0 upgrade?something Samsung should make clear?this might be the best answer. It wouldn?t cost nearly as much for Samsung to develop and test, while consumers thinking Samsung has let them down might be more accepting of the situation.

(CNN) -- Mexican army special forces have arrested a top lieutenant for alleged drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

Troops arrested Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Friday in "a surgical operation in Cuiliacan" in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, said Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, a Defense Ministry spokesman.

Cabrera, who was responsible for the activities of the Pacific Cartel in Durango and the southern part of the state of Chihuahua, was detained after fleeing from Durango, Trevilla told reporters.

"The analysis of his behavior permitted (us) to find the building where he was hiding" and Cabrera was taken into custody without violence, Trevilla said. Firearms, computer equipment and other documentation were seized, too, he said.

Cabrera, who appeared Monday in the office of a prosecutor who specializes in organized crime, was responsible for Guzman's security in Durango, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

He is charged with possessing firearms reserved for use by the army and falsification of a public document, a spokeswoman for the attorney general said.

Trevilla said Cabrera was involved in kidnappings, extortion and arson.

"The violence caused him to rise within the organization," said Trevilla, who predicted that the arrest will affect the cartel's leadership and abilities.

Guzman, who is under indictment by U.S. authorities in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, is described by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as one of "the most powerful drug traffickers in Mexico." In 2004, the U.S. government announced a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

He is accused of running a major network that distributes cocaine and heroin.

He is worth about $1 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which began listing him on its billionaires list in 2009. The magazine lists him as No. 55 on its Most Powerful People list and as the only crime lord on its list of Mexico's billionaires.

NCAA Basketball: Illinois vs. Missouri Preview & Free Pick

?The border battle between Illinois and Missouri will take place again tonight. Illinois had dominated this series for years, but the Tigers have won the last two meetings.

What are you waiting for? Click Here NOW to use our insider knowledge today to BET on all the NFL Football Future Odds in the?Best sportsbooks today.

College Basketball Gambling Odds from Bookmaker
NCAA Basketball Betting Favorite: Missouri -7
Over/Under: 139.5

Both teams come into this game ranked in the top 25. Illinois is 11-1 and ranked number 24. Missouri is unbeaten and in the eighth spot in this week?s polls. Expect a hard fought game here.

Bruce Weber?s Fighting Illini have struggled to find consistency on the offensive end this year. Illinois is shooting just 44.5% from the floor. The three-point line has been a real thorn in this team?s side. The Fighting Illini try quite a few three?s, but they are knocking down just 32.5%. D.J. Richardson is the team?s leading scorer this year at 14.4 points per game. Sophomore Meyers Leonard is the most improved player on the team, and his presence inside has helped this team a ton this season. He averages 13 points and eight boards per game, and he also has 29 blocks on the year. The Fighting Illini allow just 57 points per contest.?? NCAA Basketball: Illinois vs. Missouri Preview & Free Pick

Many people thought Missouri would be down this year after Mike Anderson left the school, but Frank Haith is doing a great job with this team. They are still pressing and making life miserable for the opponent, but they are also playing great half court defense this year. Missouri is first in the nation in field goal percentage at 52.6%. They are second in all of basketball in points per game at 87.9 points per contest. The Tigers have four players averaging at least 12.6 points per game this year. Marcus Denmon and Kim English are the team?s best shooters, but Michael Dixon is a great slasher.

Missouri is a better team than Illinois at this point because of all their options offensively. Look for the Tigers to win a third straight game in this rivalry.

Prediction: Missouri 74 Illinois 65

Don Cherry Is Canada's 'Nutty Uncle Mowing The Lawn In His Underwear,' Says Ron James (VIDEO)

Don Cherry can't get a break (or is it that Canadians can?t get a break from Don Cherry?) Either way, Canada?s ?patron saint? of hockey is under fire from all corners.

Children?s singer Raffi recently urged his 3,800 Twitter followers to mute Coach?s Corner, accusing Cherry of being a personality who ?sounds and acts like a bully.?

Cherry was angered to learn a fake quote attributed to him was included in a list of the year?s most memorable quotes by The Canadian Press (CP apologized).

And Cherry himself had to apologize for comments he made in October about a group of retired NHL enforcers.

Which makes Grapes ripe for the picking by Ron James, who takes a swipe at Cherry and his sartorial choices on the Ron James Show: New Year?s Edition, which airs on CBC TV Jan. 1 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

?Geez, you never know what he?s going to say any more do you? He?s like a nutty uncle mowing the lawn in his underwear, isn?t he?,? James says.

As for Cherry?s wild suits, James notes, ?Liberace on acid couldn?t dream up those fashion nightmares.?

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE

The Ron James Show airs weekly on CBC TV, Friday nights at 8 p.m. ET. His New Year?s Eve Special airs Jan. 1, 2012 at 9 p.m. He?s also on Facebook and Twitter.

Motorola MOTOACTV firmware bump gives you marathon-battery life (video)

Fitness people love to make us feel guilty as they jog past the car, sneering as they watch us eat six double downs in one go. It's those people who will be happy that Motorola's Motoactv is getting a firmware update promising better battery life and power-saving settings -- including a marathon mode that'll give you eight hours of accompanied running. You'll also find additional clock faces and the ability to measure your heart rate even when stationary. You know, with their clear skin and no body fat, maybe they've got the right idea and we should give some serious consideration to changing our ways -- you know, in January.
