Family's Loss Highlights Importance Of Renter's Insurance | NBC 4i

By: Denise Alex | NBC4

On Sunday, a Westerville family lost nearly everything in a fire.? They say they have no hope of replacing many of their belongings because they, like so many others, did not have renters insurance.

"We saw more smoke coming through the roof and it was like oh my God," Danica Garber said her mom woke up from a nap in the afternoon barely making it out of their Westerville home before smoke and flames took over.

"It's definitely going to be a day I will never forget but it could be bad if somebody didn't make it," said Garber wiping away a tear.

She tells NBC4's Denise Alex she has been renting the home for seven years, renting without renters insurance.

"There are a lot of nuances about insurance policies they are all developed to assist that person in a time of need, said Walter Mosley.

The Columbus insurance agent says no one ever thinks they'll have to use it until tragedy strikes.? He adds renters insurance can run as low as $150 a year.

Garber says firefighters let them in the home to take whatever valuables they could but within minutes hot spots flared up and she, her daughter, sister and mother had to get out.? The single mom says the fire ignited from a wood burning stove in the basement and traveled up through the ceiling leaving fire, smoke and water damage just about everywhere.

"A lot of my friends at school they gave me I'm happy you?re O.K. cards," said 11-year-old Lily Garber.

Lily says their cats even survived the fire but the Garbers wished they could have saved more.

"I'm going to definitely make sure I have renters insurance from now on. I just procrastinated, procrastinated, procrastinated," said Danica Garber.

She added because the homeowner had insurance on the house it is covered and is expected to be renovated in 6 months.

In the meantime Garber looks for a place for her family to stay temporarily.

She hopes to move back into the Westerville house they call home with renter's insurance.

Fujitsu's Wandant dog pedometer tracks your pet's moves, uploads it to the cloud

There's a whole host of techy tools that will let you log your 10k personal best, and break down your splits into minute detail, but what about poor old Rover? Fujistu spotted this gap, and created Wandant -- a sensor-laden neck tag for dogs complete with cloud-based service for tracking your pooch's wellbeing. The hardware will log your pet's footsteps, amount of shivering plus temperature change, and upload it automatically via your smartphone or PC. The software will present you these data over time, with the option of manually inputting further details such as food amount, a diary with photos and -- for those with stronger constitutions -- stool condition. Like human-focused equivalents, there will also be provisions for sharing your dog's efforts, but thankfully only with vets and research institutions. There's no details on hardware pricing just yet, but the online component is free for the first year (JPY 420 / about $5 per month there after). Money no object for your mutt? Sadly only available in Japan for the time being, so you'll need to include a return ticket in that splurge too.

3 new novels about young people on a mission

As harbingers of doom go, it's hard to think of one prettier than a hillside full of butterflies.

That's what Dellarobia Turnbow encounters on her way to a tryst in a hunting shack with a 22-year-old named Jimmy (?you wouldn't wreck your life for a Jimmy,? she thinks ruefully).

In Barbara Kingsolver's new novel, Flight Behavior, climate change has interrupted the migratory patterns of monarch butterflies, causing them to set down in Appalachia instead of the mountain in Mexico where the insects have always congregated.

Dellarobia, who wasn't wearing her glasses because they were too unsexy, sees the butterflies first as a ?vale of fire:? ?[T]he mountain seemed to explode with light. Brightness of a new intensity moved up the valley in a rippling wave, like the disturbed surface of a lake. Every bough glowed with an orange blaze. ? Trees turned to fire, a burning bush.?

Taking it as a sign, the 27-year-old mom of two turns around and marches back down the mountain to reclaim her life.

Her husband, Cub, thinks they're a miracle; her father-in-law, Burley, regards them as a nuisance; and her mother-in-law, Hester, isn't sure what to think, especially after a doctored picture of Dellarobia as ?Our Lady of the Butterflies? goes viral.

To Ovid Byron, the entomologist who comes to town after Dellarobia's find hits the news, the change could well represent the end of days, at least for the monarch. He and his team pitch camp next to the Turnbows' barn, working frantically before a killing frost can wipe out the butterflies.

Kingsolver won the Orange Prize in 2010 for ?The Lacuna,? which traveled from Mexico to North Carolina over the course of decades and included such larger-than-life figures as artist Frida Kahlo and her husband, muralist Diego Rivera. ?Flight Behavior? is more tightly focused.

For those not eager to be hectored at in their free time, not to worry: ?Flight Behavior? is not a thinly disguised lecture about the dangers of greenhouse gas emissions (although a confrontation between Byron and a TV reporter is perhaps less climactic than planned). Kingsolver, who studied as a scientist and whose nonfiction ?Animal, Vegetable, Miracle? chronicled her family's attempt to eat locally for a year, makes her position clear, but she is telling a story first. "Flight Behavior" is by far the most accessible climate-change novel I've ever read.?

Nor is ?Flight Behavior? patronizing toward its main character.

When an officious do-gooder tries to give Dellarobia a pamphlet on ways to emit less greenhouse gas, she turns the tables, pointing out that poverty may make her one of the most carbon-neutral Americans out there. (Eat less in restaurants? She hasn't had a meal out in more than two years. Don't buy bottled water? Who'd be fool enough to pay for water when the well is just fine?) Kingsolver, who lives in Appalachia, also does a nice job detailing what lack of money in the U.S. actually looks like, as opposed to pop culture versions that put picturesque rags on middle-class life.

?After mating, the female tears off her wings and crawls in a hole to start her own colony,? Dellarobia's son Preston reads out of an old encyclopedia about the butterflies. To his mom, who got pregnant at 17 and gave up on college, that sounds pretty true to life.

?It had to mean something,? Dellarobia thinks about the visitation of butterflies, a sentiment that takes on the air of a prayer the more she regards the last 10 years of her life.

Slow Parenting?or something else we maybe made up

Ryan and I have never discussed our ?parenting style?. Rarely do we discuss how to handle a situation that arises, because we?ve always very much been on the same track. That is, we?re on the slow track.

I?ve read a little bit about the Slow Parenting movement & parts of it are straight up crazypants (hahahaha, no tv ever, hahahaha, hippies.) But this quote kind of sums up the best of the way it fits my family so well:

?To me, Slow parenting is about bringing balance into the home. Children need to strive and struggle and stretch themselves, but that does not mean childhood should be a race. Slow parents give their children plenty of time and space to explore the world on their own terms. They keep the family schedule under control so that everyone has enough downtime to rest, reflect and just hang out together. They accept that bending over backwards to give children the best of everything may not always be the best policy. Slow parenting means allowing our children to work out who they are rather than what we want them to be. ?

-Carl Honor?,?author of??The Power of Slow: Finding Balance and Fulfillment Beyond the Cult of Speed,?

Our daughters are involved in no sports, we belong to no clubs (well, besides BBTCC), we attend no weekly meetings.

It?s not that we mean to deprive our children, that?s not the intention in the least. We simply always want our life to revolve around home. I genuinely think that there is no way Bella can appreciate right now what it means to belong to a club or participate in a team sport, beyond thinking it?s cool cause other kids are doing it. And it makes my hair stand on end to picture what would inevitably happen one day?scene:

I rush in the door from work, see Bella standing in the kitchen holding a wand, dressed in a tutu, remnants of oatmeal around her mouth. I?m angry. She has ballet in 30 minutes.?

?Isabella! Get dressed right now, you know?we have to leave NOW!?

?But Mooooom?.I don?t even wanna?go. My?umm?my foot hurts. And uhh?I have an itchy throat.?

?Too bad. We committed. We paid for it. You?re going. Get dressed and be back downstairs in 15 minutes. We?ll eat in the car.?

End scene.

Doesn?t that sound dreadful? It does, right?! I know. I KNOW.?And it?s exactly what would happen, minor script changes notwithstanding. Regardless of the financial strappings, how in the world of flying pegasuses (pegusi? pegasusseesses?) would we ever co-ordinate the constant comings & goings of three kids? When would we ever sit? Would we ever speak? Would we only speak of what the children were up to? Would our dinner table start to look like the backseat of a minivan, more barked commands, fewer laughs and even fewer chairs pulled up?

We willingly let our daughters fail. We painfully let them struggle. We force them to ask for help in their own words, on their own terms. We high five and verbally reward them for a job well done- big or small. (We buy no toys for demonstrating an expected behaviour.)??We fix what we can, and admit fully when we cannot. Our daughters cry and they feel very sorry for themselves, they talk about wanting to do certain things and we have to tell them no. Sometimes? Sometimes we tell them yes. ?Can we play the Game of Life, Mom?? Yes. But, lemme tell you kids, if you?re assholes about the rules? I?m out. If we?re just driving our fake cars around the board, grabbing up the pink house and all the babies in all the world, awesome! But if all of us are playing? The rules stand, ladies. And if you?re a jerk and miserable, I would rather pack up the whole dang thing. My boss has rules & expectations of me, I am required to follow them. And I didn?t just learn to do that from my boss.

In our house, slow parenting means mostly that we actually do as it says: slow down. My anxious personality cannot possibly handle the hustle and bustle of constant activity and shuttling. I had three kids so I could fill my house with laughter and love and tradition and memories. Fill my house. True, some of those very memories can be made while they are competing in a sport they love, but we?re just not there yet. Right now, they are little?I don?t quite want to share my time with a thousand intrusions just yet. Let?s just stay home, ladies. With the dog and the open kitchen and the pool and the colouring books strewn across the table. Let?s eat chicken nuggets sometimes in the basement and then I?ll let you run screaming around the staircase while I ignore the pile of mail on the counter again. How about you let me relax for a few minutes after work and I?ll let you play on my phone. You pick the books, I pick the chair.

There?s plenty of too-soon time for those ladies to grow right up and think I?m lame to be around. While I?ve still got some status to hold on to, we?re going to slowly parent them with just the right amount of resistance and sway. Let them turn into who they?re really going to be. Let them change their minds a thousand times about just who that is. Let them hear me in their heads saying: easy now, slow down?you?re doing great, now circle back and check yourself.?

?

(?before you wreck yourself. Come on. I can?t be the only one who was thinking that?!)

Microsoft vs. Google trial over patents finishes up

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A Google expert witness testified on Tuesday that Microsoft will make roughly $94 billion in revenue through 2017 from its Xbox game console and Surface tablet that use Google's patented wireless technology.

Michael Dansky, an expert for Google's Motorola Mobility unit, testified on the last day of a high stakes trial over patents between Microsoft and Google in Seattle. The $94 billion figure he cited also includes a wireless adapter that Microsoft no longer sells. It was not clear how far back he was counting past revenues.

Microsoft declined comment on the figure.

The week-long trial in a Seattle federal court examined how much of a royalty Microsoft Corp should pay Google Inc for a license to some of Motorola's patents. Google bought Motorola earlier this year for $12.5 billion, partly for its library of communications patents.

Motorola had sought up to $4 billion a year for its wireless and video patents, while Microsoft argues its rival deserves just over $1 million a year.

If U.S. District Judge James Robart decides Google deserves only a small royalty, then its Motorola patents would be a weaker bargaining chip for Google to negotiate licensing deals with rivals.

The rapid rise of smartphones has sparked an explosion of litigation between major players disputing ownership of the underlying technology and the design of handsets.

Apple Inc and Microsoft have been litigating in courts around the world against Google and partners like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which use the Android operating system on their mobile devices.

Apple contends that Android is basically a copy of its iOS smartphone software, and Microsoft holds patents that it contends cover a number of Android features.

In return, Motorola and some other Android hardware makers launched countering legal action.

Before trial, Robart said testimony about patent license agreements between Microsoft, Motorola and other tech companies could be disclosed to the public, along with other sensitive financial information.

However, the judge reversed himself this week and said he was bound by appellate precedent to keep that information secret. On Tuesday he cleared the courtroom and heard two hours of testimony in secret.

During the open session, Dansky said Motorola's video patents are crucial to Microsoft and other tech companies, and deserve a high royalty.

"You will have a difficult time selling smart phones or tablets," Dansky said, without Motorola's technology.

Robart is not expected to release a ruling for several weeks as both companies must file further legal briefs.

The case in U.S. District Court, Western District of Washington is Microsoft Corp. vs. Motorola Inc., 10-cv-1823.

Best Heli Skiing

For those who want to crank the level a bit when it comes to luxury and extreme skiing, Heli boarding or heli skiing is the sport for you! Unlike the usual skiing and snowboarding wherein a lift brings you to the top of the slope, in heli skiing and heli boarding, a helicopter does the job.

Heli skiing is usually done by professionals especially if they decide to ski in hard to reach places or ski untouched terrain! There are dozens of ski parks and terrains in the world which are great for heli skiing, but nothing compares to skiing the Andes Mountains in Mendoza Argentina!

Skiing in the Andes Mountains

To ski the Andes Mountains would be on anyones bucket list. It would be amazing if you could ski down the slopes of the Andes which are rarely touched by skiers. The only possible way to get to the top is through transport by a helicopter. Heli skiing in Andes is considered as one of the best in the world since the conditions of the terrain and snow are so much better. The Andes Mountains has one of the best powdered snows on Earth. You can choose between various descends from different drop offs and even have exploratory runs down the slopes.

This place may not be recommended for first time skiers, but its an experience worth preparing for.

Winter Sports in Argentina

Mendoza Argentina is one of the most sought after winter sports destinations in South America. Guests who are Heli Skiing to the Andes can expect that it is moderately cold during the mid day and extremely cold during night time wherein temperatures range from 11 to -1.4 degrees.

Just like most heli skiers, people visit the Andes Mountains in search for a skiing experience that they will never feel in a regular ski park. Other things to be enjoyed on Andes ski trips are the long descents downwards, the steep slopes, and the old trees which makes up its ski portfolio. Although the sport is generally safe, it is highly recommended that skier in the Andes have previous experience with steep slopes and rugged terrain as this is what they will expect in the there.

Heli Skiing in Style

The Andes Mountains is a destination you should always prepare for. Although there are no specific techniques that should be learned to survive the downward descent, skiers should already be in the intermediate and advanced stage of skiing. Also, be sure to wear the proper clothing to protect you from the cold and other external factors.

Centrica to abandon nuclear plants in Britain as energy giant switches investment to US market

Centrica is expected to turn its back on building new nuclear power stations in Britain and instead focus its expansion in the US.
The owner of British Gas will formally take the decision by January at the latest to end its partnership with French energy giant EDF to build a new Hinkley Point power station in Somerset.
According to senior company sources, only a dramatic change in Government policy on subsidising nuclear power would create a business case for investment.

Tensions Escalate after Israeli Air Strikes Kill Hamas Military Leader

On Wednesday, in response to rocket attacks from Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, Israel launched a series of air strikes that killed Hamas military leader Ahmed al-Jabari. Today, both sides have reported a number of casualties. Isabel Kershner, reporter for Takeaway partner The New York Times, is in the Israeli town of Sderot, on the Gaza border.

Tensions between Israel and Gaza have run high since Israel unilaterally disengaged from Gaza in 2005. Palestinians living in Gaza launched rockets into Israel in the years following Israel's disengagement, and Israel launched a three-week offensive into Gaza in the winter of 2008-2009, killing approximately 1,400 Palestinians.?

As Israeli-Palestinian tensions rise, Israel may feel particularly isolated in the post-Arab Spring Middle East. In stark contrast to ousted Egyptian president and military commander Hosni Mubarak, current Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's Freedom and Justice Party released a statement that read, in part, "The wanton aggression against Gaza proves that Israel has yet to realize that Egypt has changed and that the Egyptian people who revolted against oppression will not accept assaulting Gaza."

Aaron David Miller, Vice President at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and former Middle East negotiator, discusses the current conflict and Israel's position in the evolving Middle East.

Mozilla's Free Popcorn Maker App: Remix Your Videos the Easy Way

Posted by Ed Carrasco on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 ? ?

We often watch videos without ever fully understanding the context of what we?re watching. Mozilla seems to have a solution for creators wanting to remix videos with content from the web and social media sites.

Today, they launched their free Popcorn Maker app during the Mozilla Festival in London. This app makes it simple for the average video user to remix their videos and doesn?t require knowledge in HTML, Javascript or coding. Users can pull anything from the web and incorporate it into their videos.

popcorn maker 1 Mozillas Free Popcorn Maker App: Remix Your Videos the Easy Way

This is their first full release of the app. Last year, they released a beta app called Popcorn.js, which has a similar purpose to Popcorn Maker.

In a blog post, they wrote: ?A year ago at last year?s Festival, we released Popcorn.js 1.0, and with it a way for filmmakers, journalists, artists, and bloggers to integrate audio and video into web experiences. Popcorn has since become one of the most popular ways to build time-based media experiences for the web. It has proven to be uniquely powerful for bespoke web demos, films, visualizations, etc.?

For instance, if you wanted to add a link, embed an article, Twitter reactions, Wikipedia article pop-ups or a photo into videos, Popcorn Maker makes it possible to annotate videos to make the viewing experience more interactive for viewers and add much needed context.

Mozilla?s Popcorn Maker would be ideal for novice and casual film editors who have yet to grasp the complexities of Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. This tool is useful if a YouTube or Vimeo video exists, so editing raw footage is pretty much impossible. But if you want to make your existing video more appealing and interactive, then Popcorn Maker is your answer.

Watch this short video below to a get a glimpse at how Popcorn Maker can work for creators.

EU lawmakers challenge Catholic nominee for health job

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European lawmakers challenged Malta's nominee for the EU's top health job on Tuesday because of his contempt for homosexuals and opposition to abortion, after his predecessor quit over an investigation linking him to bribery.

European Greens, Liberals and Socialists, who make up half the parliament, spoke out against Tonio Borg, Malta's foreign minister and a devout Catholic who has lobbied against abortion in his home country.

"I don't doubt your ability but I do question your views," British Liberal Democrat Chris Davies told Borg during a three-hour hearing on his nomination.

A 50-strong group of EU lawmakers pressed Borg for at least an hour to either defend his views on abortion and homosexuality or repeal them. They will cast a non-binding vote on Borg's nomination by secret ballot next week.

Borg avoided being drawn. "These are matters to be exclusively decided by member states. It has been the standard answer and that will be my standard answer," he added.

Conservatives, who are likely to back Borg's nomination, make up a little less than half the parliament, with independents holding the remaining seats.

The controversy threatens to further embarrass the European Commission after the previous health commissioner, Malta's John Dalli, resigned last month in a tobacco lobbying scandal.

It also casts doubt on selection procedures at the EU executive which places officials in unelected posts that shape regulation across Europe at a time when many Europeans question the Commission's democratic legitimacy.

Borg's personal views matter because the EU health commissioner oversees sensitive policy on issues such as access to healthcare, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and stem cell research, lawmakers and rights groups say.

At least one rights group, the European Humanist Federation, has written to the Commission's president Jose Manuel Barroso to protest Borg's nomination.

In 2004, the parliament's decision to reject Italian politician Rocco Buttiglione, who said he believed homosexuality was a sin, forced Italy to put forward someone else for the post of justice commissioner.

"THAT'S ALL WE NEED NOW"

Christian groups say Borg is being unfairly targeted for his Catholic faith. Borg, who is also Malta's deputy prime minister, has insisted his views are not extremist and that he champions everyone's right to their own opinions.

His comments from 2009 during a debate in the Maltese parliament on property laws have caused the most fuss among liberals in Brussels and in Malta. Borg is reported to have said gay couples could not expect to be eligible for social housing.

"That's all we need now. After we've finally decided to limit inheritance to married couples and children, now we are expected to extend this protection to those who decide to go and live with someone of the same sex," Borg is cited saying in 2009, according to an October 29 European Parliament report.

Malta is a conservative country and in June the island nation said it wanted the Commission to stop funding stem cell research using human embryos, which is allowed in some EU countries.

The former commissioner Dalli was questioned by police in Malta on Tuesday, local media reported, over the tobacco corruption scandal which forced his resignation.

Spike Seen in Aggressive Brain Cancer in Denmark

Date Published: Monday, November 12th, 2012

The number of men in Denmark diagnosed with brain cancer has seen a significant spike in the last decade, according to the Danish Cancer Society (DCS).?The DCS made the announcement based on the number of patients who were found to have glioblastoma?the most malignant type of brain cancer.

While the DCS did not provide an opinion as to what may be causing the increase, some in the medical community have already begun to offer opinions that the increase could be connected to cell phone use. An Interphone study and the group led by Sweden?s Lennart Hardell have previously said that long-term cell phone use is associated with higher rates of glioma, microwavenews.com said.

?I think the data is true and valid,? Christoffer Johansen of the DNC told Microwave News. Johansen is a part of a team of researchers who have been investigating possible links between cell phones and the development of brain tumors. The group has held its position that no link exists.

The controversy surrounding cell phone use and the development of brain tumors has swelled in recent weeks after Italy?s Supreme Court awarded a verdict to a man who was diagnosed with a brain tumor after several decades of working in an environment that featured heavy phone use on a daily basis.

For Teachers Only

For Teachers Only

For your information, this article is for teachers only. If you are not a teacher you are welcome to stick around for an inside scoop on teacher business. Teachers are a special breed of beings with special interests. Interests like supplementing meager wages and making ends meet.

Also for your information, teachers are not exactly paupers. They just live on very modest incomes ... enough for a roof over the head and for food on the table. It is not an income worthy of the important job they do.

An occasional luxury is not unknown to teachers but they will pay for that luxury by pinching in other areas. Feeling the pinch is standard existence for teachers ? even when the economy is good. But, don?t worry about teachers. Teachers are survivors. They?ve lovingly survived the classroom, after all.

Who cares about teachers anyway? They?re demanding, they?re picky, they?re persistent, they?re challenging, and they are sometimes annoying ? don?t even worry about paying them decently ... right?

Teachers, there are many ways to supplement an income but one of the most interesting is through internet marketing. I know, the term internet marketing is enough to scare you to pieces but it is just wording. The truth of the matter is you can supplement your income through web site building.

Surf the internet and you will find hundreds of sites showing you how to buy, sell or create a web site. You will see sites willing to build a website for you. I say, skip all the frustration and simply Google, ?Wealthy Affiliate University.? They will get you started on web site building at no initial charge.

For your further information, internet marketing can be done from home in your spare time. That makes it perfect for a busy teacher. If you are a newbie and have very little internet experience there are web sites that cater to a newbie status with tips, hints, and helpful suggestions. WA is one of them.

?Newbie? web sites usually simplify procedures and make their information appealing to beginners. I would not go as far as to say internet sites for newbies are legion but they are plentiful. Don?t spend hours trying to find a new idea or a way to make money online. Cut the stress down to size and start with WA.

If you ever have an opportunity to support teachers in their struggle for fair pay, please do. And, to coin an old phrase; ?If you can read this thank a teacher.? Pay back just a little by supporting the teachers in any way you can.

The Rapid Economic Growth Experienced in China After 1978

Economic growth is a measure of the rate of change in the amount of an economy`s output. It is a key factor in the determination of a nation`s economy and is caused by increase in demand, interest rates, labour and productivity. Liberalisation on the other hand is making less strict, the laws of a certain system. On the account of economic reform in China that commenced in 1978, the Chinese economy has risen exponentially at a rate of 9.6 percent for over twenty years (Wong 1). A large proportion of the country's economic output was run by the state which set its production goals, controlled prices and allocated resources throughout most of the economy. Causes The Chinese government took part in large scale investment to support industrialisation and capital during the 1960s and 1970s (Morrison 3). Due to this, by 1978 about three-fourths of industrial production amounted from centrally controlled state-owned enterprises. Since 1978, China has become the second fastest growing economy in the world after the United States Hassan (2011). After the introduction of economic reforms in 1978 following many years of state control of all productive assets by the states, China started showing great improvement. It even encouraged the formation of private businesses, rural enterprises, liberalised foreign trade and investment and education of the working population. These reforms aided in the rise of the economy due to the introduction of profit incentives to rural enterprises, farms, private businesses and foreign trade.

By encouraging foreign investment, the Chinese government increased economic transformation. According to Hu and Khan (2003), cumulative foreign investment, in existence before 1978, reached nearly US$100 billion in 1994, yearly inflows rose from less than 1 percent of the total fixed investment in 1979 to 18 percent in 1994. The foreign money earned from foreign investment has contributed to the construction of industries, creation of employment, linking China to some of the leading foreign markets and resulted in important exchange of technology.

Trade was one of the major contributing factors of China's economic growth with the Chinese government expanding the role of the markets in the private sector. The putting in place of market factors into the economy by improved incentive system and efficiency in allocation of resources contributed to the success. An example is the success of rural reforms and industrialisation of the rural areas. Reforms in the agricultural sector during 1978-1984 were the most successful market reform aside from being the first one. In these seven years grain output is said to have increased by over 100 million tons thus solving hunger and malnutrition problems. The rapid growth in rural income enabled the reduction of urban-rural income inequality enabling farmers to abandon traditional agriculture and engaged in non-farm production. Foreign investment has also resulted in the increase in total investment (Feng and Zang, 2000). Furthermore, it has shown great proficiency in the provision of finance thus helping in the promotion of growth leading to technology transfer, increase in labour force, management improvement, promotion of competition and exports` increase. According to Sun (1998), foreign investment accounts for 17 percent of China`s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth from 1983 to 1995. Foreign investment is thus considered to be the key factor for the exponential growth of China`s economy (Lin and Shu 148). Capital accumulation has played a role in the increasing economy of the Chinese through capital assets such as construction of new factories, acquisition of machinery and improvement in communication systems. Also, the number of workers increased thus increasing the driving force hence the economic boom in the country. According to an IMF study, from 1952 to 1978, capital accumulation accounted for 65 percent of China`s output growth, with labour input and productivity accounting for 18 percent and 17 percent respectively.

Previous research on economic development suggests a significant rise in capital investment in economic growth with capital investment also playing a portion of the country`s economic growth (weekly pulse, 2011) and making the country more productive. All these attribute to better technology, machinery and increased investment in infrastructure thus raising more output. Through liberalisation, the Chinese government allowed farmers to own and sell their produce in the private sector. Due to this, the farmers were able to set their own production goals, sell products at competitive prices and retain earnings for future investment. Furthermore, more room for private ownership of production was available with the privately owned businesses creating employment, developing high demand consumer products and earning foreign currency through foreign trade. Also, the establishment of special economic zones along the coast with the main aim of attracting foreign investors who wished to take advantage of the labour costs in China positively, stimulated high technology imports to China and encouraged exports out of the country (Morisson, 2006). According to Holz (2008), the economic reforms that showed much significance occurred at the start of 1990s, with price controls withdrawal and the freeing of internal trade and foreign investments. The rapid growth in the agricultural sector developed new types of production, motivated by the high returns to be gained from such investments through profits. Due to this incorporation of agricultural factors in the economy, efficient resource allocation was established and an improved incentive system captured. One of the main cited examples to explain this is the success of the rural reform like the decollectivization of agriculture and the setting up of rural industries

Conclusion Other than showing vast economic growth in the country, China is the world`s fastest growing major economy with growth rates averaging 10 percent over the past 30 years (weekly pulse 2011). Also, according to the weekly pulse 2011, the People`s Republic of China (PRC) is the world`s second largest economy after the United States. The increase in Chinese`s economic growth has also led to a positive change in the improvement of its people`s living standards and raised them from extreme poverty in which they were in. A part of the country's economic output was under the state that set its production goals, controlled its prices and also allocated resources.

Online Marketing Terms Explained | Cashpowerinfo

"Online Marketing Terms Explained"Like any industry, the online marketing world is full of its own acronyms and jargon. For example, if increasing your website?s visibility has been a priority for your business, you might already be familiar with one important term: SEO.

SEO is an acronym for search engine optimization and refers to both on-site and off-site activities designed to improve a website?s performance in the natural search engine results pages. On-site SEO involves modifying page content to be as appealing as possible to the search engines, such as by adding target keywords into page title tags, headline tags and body content. Off-site SEO, on the other hand, involves strategies to encourage the creation of backlinks pointing back toward the site.

If you?re in search of a greater understanding of marketing language and concepts, here are explanations for eight more terms to help keep you from feeling lost as you explore the digital marketing world.

1.PPC
PPC is an acronym for pay-per-click advertising, a website marketing method that involves bidding a rate that will be charged whenever a search user clicks on an ad. One popular PPC advertising platform is Google AdWords, which displays results in the sponsored listing area of the Google results pages.

2. SEM
This stands for search engine marketing, which is an umbrella term encompassing all the internet marketing techniques that can help increase a website?s visibility, including both SEO and PPC. Companies often use this term to cover the impact of all Web marketing activities on their revenue and profits.

3. SERPs
SERPs is shorthand for search engine results pages ? the lists of suggested websites displayed when search engines run queries. An SEO consultant, for example, might say to a client, ?As a result of my efforts, your website is now ranking on the first page of the Google SERPs for the following five keywords.?

4. PR
This is shorthand for PageRank ? a proprietary website quality measure developed by Google. PageRank scores are assessed on a scale from 0 to 10, based largely on the number and quality of inbound links pointing at a given site. PageRank is considered a general measure of how highly Google regards your website, as well as how much value the links pointing at your site provide.

5. CTR
This stands for click-through rate and is used most often to measure the results of PPC advertising. In that case, CTR refers to the number of viewers who click on a specific ad, based on ad impressions or overall search volume.

CTR also can measure the effectiveness of on-site marketing elements. For example, after engaging in rigorous website A/B split testing ? comparing different versions of elements to help optimize them on your site ? you may determine that the CTR of an internal banner ad increases by 10 percent when moved to a more optimal location on your site.

6 . CPC
CPC stands for cost per click, which is used in a few different circumstances online:

? PPC advertisers use CPC to refer to the rates they?re billed for ad clicks, which may be slightly different than their bid prices due to a number of different factors.
? Websites that display blocks of PPC ads as a revenue generating strategy may refer to their payout as their CPC. Sites that include popular Google AdSense ads typically receive between 40 and 60 percent of the CPC advertisers pay for each click.

Seeing these acronyms on online marketing blogs and websites can be confusing at first. But with a little practice, you can work them into your own lexicon and join in the conversation on website marketing best practices.

Ford trademarks "Black Label" for Lincoln

Bentley has offered Black Label cars (as well as Red and Green Label), Mercedes-Benz has Black Series, Audi and Porsche have Black Editions. Seeking a pass into the true luxury club, could Lincoln soon have a line of Black Label cars to call its own?

Parent company Ford trademarked the phrase "Lincoln Black Label" last month, and not only do we not have any clue what it might signify, the company might never apply the name to anything. It's an interesting way to go, though; Black Label is a hugely popular appellation for everything from soap to fashion to something called a "pore penetrator," and it's almost always meant to signify an appreciable notch above the norm. The question is, what kind of Lincoln could wear that badge and not be accused of being a cynical marketing exercise? Even on a Ford forum one poster wrote, "While I think that would be an awesome use of Black label unfortunately Lincoln doesn't have any vehicles nor the platform to back that up."

It would also be a departure from how Lincoln has signified its special lines until recently. Designer cars that began in the seventies, like the Cartier Town Car and Emilio Pucci Mark IV, gave way to the generic Designer trim level and then Signature Limited (itself a step above the Signature L) that was last used on the 2011 Lincoln Town Car. The present offerings are only differentiated by engines, lacking an equivalent of Ford's Titanium branding ? on the MKS even the options packages are called "Equipment Group 20XA" ? and this could be how Black Label finds a home. But tell us, what kind of Lincoln would deserve it?

Nexus 10 review

DNP Nexus 10 review

When Google unleashed the Nexus 7 upon us earlier this summer we were caught completely off-guard. A $200 tablet that was legitimately good in every regard? It was unheard of at the time, and even five months later it's still a really nice slate. Now it has a big brother, the Nexus 10, this time coming courtesy of Samsung. At $399 it arrives with less fanfare and a higher price, but it also comes with a very distinctive selling point: a stratospherically high resolution.

This 10.1-inch panel has an eye-watering 2,560 x 1,600 resolution -- the very same as the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display but in a much smaller package. Is Google's second reference tablet the ultimate Android 10-incher at a bargain price, or is it simply another big tablet with a lot of pixels? Your answer awaits after the break.

This is your brain on politics: Neuro-science reveals brain differences between Republicans and Democrats

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? New research from the University of South Carolina provides fresh evidence that choosing a candidate may depend largely on our biological make-up. That's because the brains of self-identified Democrats and Republicans are hard-wired differently and may be naturally inclined to hold varying, if not opposing, perceptions and values. This study showed a strong link with broad social connectedness with Democrats, and a strong link with tight social connectedness with Republicans.

With the U.S. presidential election just days away, new research from the University of South Carolina provides fresh evidence that choosing a candidate may depend more on our biological make-up than a careful analysis of issues.

That's because the brains of self-identified Democrats and Republicans are hard-wired differently and may be naturally inclined to hold varying, if not opposing, perceptions and values. The USC study, which analyzed MRI scans of 24 USC students, builds on existing research in the emerging field of political neuroscience.

"The differences are significant and real," said lead researcher Roger Newman-Norlund, an assistant professor of exercise science in the Arnold School of Public Health and the director of USC's new Brain Stimulation Laboratory.

The study focused on the mirror neuron system, a network linked to a host of social and emotional abilities. After declaring their political affiliations, the subjects were given questionnaires designed to gauge their attitudes on a range of select political issues. Next, they were given "resting state" MRIs which made it possible to analyze the strength of connections within the mirror neuron system in both the left and right hemispheres of their brains; specifically the inferior frontal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus and angular gyrus.

The results found more neural activity in areas believed to be linked with broad social connectedness in Democrats (friends, the world at-large) and more activity in areas linked with tight social connectedness in the Republicans (family, country). In some ways the study confirms a stereotype about members of the two parties -- Democrats tend to be more global and Republicans more America-centric -- but it actually runs counter to other recent research indicating Democrats enjoyed a virtual biological lock on caring for others.

"The results were a little surprising," Newman-Norlund said. "This shows the picture is more complicated. One possible explanation for our results is that Democrats and Republicans process social connectedness in a fundamentally different way."

While political neuroscience and study is still largely in its infancy, the implications for future races could be big as politicians and campaign strategists learn how to exploit brain differences to make more effective, biologically targeted appeals to voters.

The research also suggests that maintaining an open mind about political issues may be easier said than done. In fact, bridging partisan divides and acting contrary to ideological preferences likely requires going against deeply ingrained biological tendencies. And while there is evidence that mirror neuron connections can change over time, it's not something that happens overnight, Newman-Norlund said.

"The (brain) differences could be a result of genetics, experiences, or a combination of both," he said. "It takes a lot of effort to see the other side and we're not going to wake up one day and all start getting along."

Understanding the differences and their origins, however, is a step in the right direction, he said.

Storm Sandy knocks October auto sales below estimates

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co and Chrysler Group LLC both reported their strongest U.S. sales for the month of October since the financial crisis sent both U.S. automakers into bankruptcy, but the destruction of storm Sandy will cause the sector to miss overall sales expectations.

Ford Motor Co's sales last month edged up 0.4 percent, while Toyota Motor Corp's sales rose about 16 percent.

GM sales rose 4.7 percent to 195,764 vehicles, while those at Chrysler, an affiliate of Italy's Fiat SpA, increased 10 percent to 126,185 vehicles. Both totals were the best either automaker had seen since 2007, before the U.S. economy went into recession and caused a drastic decline in sales that led GM and Chrysler to file for bankruptcy in 2009.

Still, results of Ford, Chrysler and Toyota came in below expectations, while GM missed some analysts' estimates, suggesting that the U.S. industry will have a hard time reaching the 14.9 million-vehicle annual sales rate economists had predicted for the month before Sandy pummeled the U.S. East Coast. Auto sales are an early indicator each month of U.S. consumer demand.

The massive storm, which hit New York City on Monday evening, hurt U.S. demand at the end of the month, with Ford officials estimating the lost sales for the entire industry at 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles.

Ford officials said that would hurt the annual rate by 300,000 vehicles, although analysts have said the industry would likely make up any lost sales in November. GM officials agreed, saying Sandy hurt the annual rate by at least 300,000 vehicles.

GM said it sees an October annual sales rate in the range of 14.4 million vehicles. Ford estimates the rate in the high 14 million range including heavy and medium-duty trucks, in line with GM.

Volkswagen AG's U.S. operations chief, Jonathan Browning, said the industry would fall short of the 10 to 11 percent gain many had predicted.

"This is not yet a full-blown recovery," Browning told reporters on a conference call. "The overall environment is one of improving optimism, but it's still not a strong positive development in terms of the overall economy." He added that demand had been choppy in some regions even before Sandy.

Before the massive storm hit, analysts had predicted the industry would show an 11 percent sales gain, led by Toyota and Honda Motor Co, which benefited from increased demand for compact cars as gasoline prices remained high across the country.

Many automakers still made gains in the month as rising home prices, attractive vehicle financing options and Americans' growing need to replace their aging cars spurred more consumers to showrooms. That bodes well for the future, a top GM executive said.

"Year over year, the light vehicle selling rate has increased for eight consecutive quarters without a tailwind from the residential housing sector, but that is starting to change," Kurt McNeil, GM's vice president of U.S. sales operations, said in a statement. "If these trends continue, housing may be the final piece of the puzzle that lifts sales above 15 million units on an annual basis."

Over the last five years, the U.S. auto sector has undergone a wrenching overhaul that led to plant closures, job losses and the government-financed bankruptcy restructurings of GM and Chrysler. Ford also overhauled its U.S. operations, but did not take a government bailout.

The October sales report will be the last before Election Day, marking the end of a contentious U.S. presidential race that has repeatedly thrust GM and Chrysler into the spotlight in televised debates, stump speeches and campaign advertisements.

The sales report also caps a busy week for the U.S. auto industry, which saw third-quarter profit reports from all three Detroit automakers.

GM shares were down 0.6 percent at $25.34 on Thursday morning, while Ford shares were down 1.4 percent at $11.00. The broad S&P 500 Index was up 1 percent. (Additional reporting by Paul Lienert and Deepa Seetharaman in Detroit; editing by Gerald E. McCormick and Matthew Lewis)

Prehistoric Transylvanian mammal had blood-red teeth

SMALL, with oversized blood-red incisors, and down the road from Dracula's lair to boot. To coincide with Halloween, we bring you Barbatodon transylvanicus, a 70-million-year-old mammal that scurried beneath the feet of dinosaurs. The discovery of a new skull, complete with teeth, gives the first clues to its diet.

Barbatodon lived in what is now Transylvania, Romania, about 200 kilometres from the castle of the bloodthirsty medieval prince Vlad Dracula. It was roughly the size of a rat and belonged to a little-known group of mammals called multituberculates that outlived the dinosaurs, then died out 35 million years ago.

Thierry Smith of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels and Vlad Codrea of the University of Babes-Bolyai in Romania, who found the fossil, shown below, say that its red tooth enamel is 3 per cent iron, which probably made it more resistant to abrasion.

Smith presented the findings at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina, last month.

So what did the diminutive mammal eat? In the new fossil, its teeth look most like those of some modern-day shrews. That suggests it may have been partial to a meal of insects. Not so much bloodsucker, then, as insect crusher.
