Ron Paul: US-born al-Qaida cleric 'assassinated'

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is condemning the Obama administration for killing an American born al-Qaida operative without a trial.

Paul, a Texas congressman known for libertarian views, says the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki on Yemeni soil amounts to an "assassination." Paul warned the American people not to casually accept such violence against U.S. citizens, even those with strong ties to terrorism.

Anwar al-Awlaki was considered one of the most influential al-Qaida operatives wanted by the United States. U.S. and Yemen officials say he was killed in a U.S. air strike targeting his convoy Friday morning.

Paul made the comments to reporters after a campaign stop Friday at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. He said America's leaders must think hard about "assassinating American citizens without charges."

Home Improvement ? Blog Archive ? Alternative Mother's Day Gifts ...

Each year it becomes harder and harder to think about what gifts you can give that one special person who brought you into this world. Maybe last year you bought a new cell phone last year, you may have gotten his novel soft, but what about this year?

Why do not you look at the kitchen to see its current appearance. Now it looks like it is new and really clean, or make it feel like to live it large enough to ensure the insects and other pests at home?

If the situation that you see is the latter, then some new kitchen cabinets and wall painting can bring to their surprise, that is nice.

Give her a holiday

Being a mother is a full time job. Before you go and do the reconstruction, it would be nice if you buy your ticket and give her some money so she could go on vacation. In this way, it will not be able to see you redo the kitchen, cabinets, or paint a kitchen wall. By the time that she came home, she will be greeted by a completely new kitchen. This is certainly a surprise for her.

If you want you can even add some new electronic devices, along with new kitchen cabinets, it will be met with full modern kitchen, that she could be proud of.

Labour Contractors

If you?re not a professional carpenter, or if you are not very handy with tools in the house, then you might want to consider other people?s work. Even if you are an experienced household appliances, kitchen cabinet contractors might very well do the job in half the time it might take you. This is because most contractors have all the tools at their disposal, and, most importantly, these devices did a few times. Their experience may prove invaluable.

This new approach is giving the gift is one that is tried and tested. People often give gifts that can be held and personal. Provide new kitchen cabinets can be very personal, because women think, a kitchen, as something that is personal to them. Although it is common practice for the whole family and estate, none more than requests kitchen mat.

This is a place of intimate conversations, and perhaps the mother of all the basic life of the child. Later on, as well as a place where my mother first taught her daughter how to cook. Bake cakes, hearty meals and the whole family, all of these make a very personal cuisine is generally home mom. Refurbishing him with love, care and a whole new look, most certainly lead to the joy that is limitless.

Debt Management In Crisis ? Guest Post | Top Finance Blog

Posted on September 29th, 2011 in debt
Listen with webreader

National debt in the US currently stands at over $14 trillion, after a dramatic rise across the last three decades. Since the financial crisis in particular US government spending has sky-rocketed pushing up the deficit, increasing national debt.

This national crisis has been mirrored by a very personal debt crisis for US citizens, with total consumer debt currently exceeding the $16 trillion mark. The US has steadily become a nation enthralled by loans, mortgages, and credit cards.

The US is suffering from an increasingly ingrained debt culture, and getting into debt has become the modus operandi for many of us. Building significant consumer debt has become normalised, while good debt management has often been left by the wayside with many struggling to repay borrowed funds.

So what does this have to do with the national debt crisis? The problem with acquiring debt, as we can see from the national deficit, arises when the consumer borrows beyond the means to repay. The US government has been borrowing at a rate faster than it can afford to repay, with far-reaching and devastating consequences for the economy, which we are likely to feel the repercussions of for some time to come. Unmanageable consumer debt can have similar consequences for the individual.

In times of increasing unemployment, when many more of us may be tempted to borrow in excess, having an excellent strategy for dealing with debt is paramount. Even in the face of great personal difficulty, inadequate debt planning or management will inevitably lead to a magnification of those difficulties, until our individual debt spirals out of control.

Borrowing can be beneficial to the economy and a form of investment in the future, and sensibly planned and managed it can be beneficial to both consumer and creditor. However, we would do well to remember that it can also easily leap out of control.

We should perhaps take the national debt crisis as a warning of what can happen when debt is inadequately managed, and view it as an opportunity to learn something about the importance of planning and foresight in our own debt management strategies.

This guest post was written by John Hughes who is the resident blogger at Independent Financial Advisor, a small UK based site that provides access to independent financial advisors as well as to debt advice charities for those struggling with their debts.

PFT's picks: Ravens over Jets, Lions over 'Boys

David AkersAP

Last week, Rosenthal?s delivery-room picks nearly matched mine, with the only disagreements coming in the Packers-Bears game and Falcons-Bucs.? He picked the Packers and I picked the Bucs and so we tied for the week at 10-6.

For the season, Rosenthal holds a one-game lead.? He?s 31-17, and I?m 30-18.

This week, Rosenthal can?t rely on the ?wife is giving birth? excuse.? But given the time at which his picks came through via email, look for him to play the ?baby is awake and crying? card liberally.

Panthers at Bears

Florio?s take:? I?ve picked the Bears to win each week this year.? I felt smart after they beat the Falcons.? I felt like I took a justified risk after they lost to the Saints.? I felt stupid after they lost to the Packers.? I?ve got a feeling I?ll soon feel like an idiot after they lose to the Panthers.? If the Bears don?t win this one, they could be 2-5 at the bye.? That should be reason enough to find a way to outscore a team that remains, for now, inferior to the Bears.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 24, Panthers 13.

Rosenthal?s take: I want to take the Panthers.? I?ve spent a while trying to think of a logical reason why they?ll win, and there isn?t one.? Carolina?s defense is a mess.? Cam Newton hasn?t faced a defense quite like the Bears.? It just feels like bad times are brewing in Chicago and a home loss like this to a feisty young Panthers team is the logical next step.

Rosenthal?s pick: Panthers 23, Bears 20.

Bills at Bengals

Florio?s take:? This feels like a potential correction game, with the Bills drained emotionally after two big come-from-behind wins and looking ahead to a pair of NFC East challenges against the Eagles and Giants.? But the new Bills, if they truly are different from the old Bills, won?t stub their toe against a team they should beat, especially since quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick used to play for the Bengals.? It also would help to not fall behind by 18 or 21 points.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 31, Bengals 21.

Rosenthal?s take: The next step for the 3-0 Bills:? Win a road game as a heavy favorite.? The next step for the surprisingly ranked No. 3 Bengals defense:? Stop a legitimate offense after three easy matchups. I like Buffalo?s chances better because they can slow down Cincy?s underrated pass rush.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bills 24, Bengals 17.

Titans at Browns

Florio?s take:? Tennessee quarterback Matthew Hasselbeck gets a chance to face his mentor, Mike Holmgren, who knows everything there is to know about Hasselbeck.? And that reminds me of Super Bowl XXXVII, when Bucs coach Jon Gruden used everything he knew about Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon to shut Gannon down.? Though the Big Show likely won?t be jumping under center this week to show the Browns defense what to expect, Holmgren will supply Dick Jauron with everything he needs to know to put the clamps on an offense that suddenly doesn?t have Kenny Britt ? and that is still waiting for Chris Johnson to snap out of his funk.

Florio?s pick:? Browns 24, Titans 21.

Rosenthal?s take: The Browns have to prove they aren?t just lucky.? They won two close games against winless teams where they appeared to be outplayed. Tennessee?s defense doesn?t look lucky.? They look rather good, with an emerging secondary.

Rosenthal?s pick: Titans 20, Browns 17.

Lions at Cowboys

Florio?s take:? In 1985, the Bears put the entire football world on notice that their nine-game winning streak wasn?t a fluke by going to Dallas and pounding the Cowboys, 44-0.? In 2011, the Lions can do the same thing with their seven-game winning streak (dating back to last year) by going to Dallas and pounding the Cowboys.? A special season in Detroit gets an early exclamation point.

Florio?s pick:? Lions 34, Cowboys 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Cowboys are winning games they shouldn?t.? The offensive line is a work in progress, to put it nicely.? The receivers don?t know where to line up.? Rob Ryan?s defense is making strides, but this amateur hour stuff won?t work against the juggernaut undefeated Lions. (How great is it to write ?juggernaut undefeated Lions? with only a little sarcasm?)

Rosenthal?s pick: Lions 31, Cowboys 27.

Steelers at Texans

Florio?s take:? The Steelers got lucky in Indianapolis.? They can?t count on luck when visiting a Texans team that needs to stay on the right side of .500 after blowing a chance to beat the Saints on the fifth anniversary of the return to the Superdome.? The offensive line is getting worse, and the Texans? defensive line is getting better.? At some point, the Steelers may have to sign a couple of off-duty police officers to provide Ben Roethlisberger with on-field security.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 24, Steelers 16.

Rosenthal?s take: There are two options for takeaway after this game:? (1) these Texans are tougher than usual; (2) these are the same old Texans. I?ll roll with the first one because these aren?t the same old Steelers.

Rosenthal?s pick: Texans 24, Steelers 21.

Saints at Jaguars

Florio?s take:? These teams have played four times, with the home team winning every game and the total point differential at two (Saints 100, Jags 98).? But there?s a sizable gap between the two franchises right now, and the blitz-happy Saints will have something special for Blaine Gabbert in his home opener.? Along with an offense that can?t be stopped, as evidenced by a conference-leading 104 points scored.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 34, Jaguars 14.

Rosenthal?s take: This matchup is exactly what Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is looking for:? A confidence booster.? New Orleans will blitz Blaine Gabbert coming off the bus.

Rosenthal?s pick: Saints 30, Jaguars 13.

Vikings at Chiefs

Florio?s take:? 0-3 vs. 0-3.? First stop on the Andrew Luck Elimination Tour, where the winner loses and the loser wins.? Look for Jared Allen to return to Kansas City with the kind of inspired play he has demonstrated all year, willing the Vikings to a big lead, that they will then try to blow.? But they?ll succeed this time.? And in succeeding, they?ll fail in the effort to get to the front of the Luck line.

Florio?s pick:? Vikings 28, Chiefs 23.

Rosenthal?s take: The Vikings have found the perfect opponent.? You only need one good half to beat the Chiefs. (Rimshot!)? This is the type of analysis you can come to expect until my daughter starts sleeping through the night.

Rosenthal?s pick: Vikings 21, Chiefs 13.

49ers at Eagles

Florio?s take:? It would be easy (and likely accurate) to assume that the Eagles will dig deep and find a way to avoid falling to 1-3.? But it?s far more fun to envision former Eagles kicker David Akers returning to Philly and making a 50-plus-yard game-winning field goal against a Dream Team that can?t seem to wake up.? The San Fran defense is good enough to give Mike Vick fits, and the Eagles defense is bad enough to give the Niners an opportunity to score enough points ? and to get in position late so that Akers can win it.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 25, Eagles 24.

Rosenthal?s take: Philly?s defense has problems, but they have more weapons than the 49ers offense.? Frank Gore isn?t his usual self and the 49ers passing game is limited to put it nicely. LeSean McCoy can win this game on his own even if Michael Vick isn?t at his best.

Rosenthal?s pick: Eagles 27, 49ers 17.

Redskins at Rams

Florio?s take:? The Redskins played at Dallas on Monday night.? They now play at St. Louis, on a short week.? And the Rams are desperate to break a slide that easily could become 0-7.? And Rex Grossman has come back down to earth after an unexpectedly strong Week One performance.? And John Beck likely will be the starter after the bye.

Florio?s pick:? Rams 23, Redskins 17.

Rosenthal?s take: It?s not just the tough schedule: The Rams have legitimately been one of the worst teams in the league. The Redskins, on the other hand, seem to maximize meager talent on offense.? The defense is much improved. That should be enough against a Rams offense searching for answers.

Rosenthal?s pick: Redskins 24, Rams 18.

Giants at Cardinals

Florio?s take:? After stumbling out of the gates against the Redskins, the Giants have found their groove, beating both the Rams and the Eagles.? It?s impossible to pick against a team that is 2-0 all-time in GlenDale, given that the Giants also won an unlikely Super Bowl there.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 27, Cardinals 17.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Giants are starting to find an identity on offense with Ahmad Bradshaw getting back to his old self and Victor Cruz getting back to his 2010 preseason self. The biggest mismatch in this game is the Giants DL against the Cardinals OL.? Kevin Kolb won?t have time to think.

Rosenthal?s pick: Giants 26, Cardinals 21.

Falcons at Seahawks

Florio?s take:? Last year, the Falcons won by 16 in Seattle.? But the Falcons arguably were better last year.? Then again, so were the Seahawks.? Look for former Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards to get after former Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, and for the Falcons offense to play like it did against the Eagles.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 30, Seahawks 20.

Rosenthal?s take: Seattle?s defense has potential to be better than average, especially against the run. Unfortunately, you still need to throw the ball to win in today?s NFL. 13 points is not going to get it done most weeks, even against a scuffling Falcons squad.

Rosenthal?s pick: Falcons 20, Seahawks 10.

Broncos at Packers

Florio?s take:? A rematch of Super Bowl XXXII.? That?s about the only reason to watch this one.? And that?s not even a reason to watch it.? The Broncos are mediocre and injured, the Packers are potent and healthy.? The Broncos have never won in Wisconsin, and the streak continues.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 31, Broncos 10.

Rosenthal?s take: Anything can happen in the NFL.? The Panthers nearly beat the Packers a few weeks ago.? The Broncos defense could be dangerous if they get Elvis Dumervil and Champ Bailey back.? That doesn?t mean I?m going to pick ?anything? actually happening.

Rosenthal?s pick: Packers 31, Broncos 16.

Patriots at Raiders

Florio?s take:? A week after a reprise of the Heidi game, Raiders fans get a taste of the Go Tuck Yourself bowl.? This time, Oakland has Richard Seymour and an offense that the Patriots may not be able to handle.? The home team needs to grind the clock and get after Tom Brady, aggressively.? Maybe after this one people will begin to actually notice that we may be in the early days of a Renaissance in Raider Nation.

Florio?s pick:? Raiders 16, Patriots 13.

Rosenthal?s take:? What a great matchup.? The ultimate pass-first team against the best smashmouth squad in football.? Richard Seymour and Oakland?s deep defensive line against his old buddies Logan Mankins and Matt Light.? This matchup scares the Patriots because of Darren McFadden. It should scare the Oakland secondary even more. Tom Brady is the right guy to expose the Raiders? depth issues.

Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 34, Raiders 30.

Dolphins at Chargers

Florio?s take:? The Chargers? wins have come by a combined 10 points over teams that are a combined 0-6.? Enter another winless team, and give the Chargers another closer-than-expected win.

Florio?s pick:? Chargers 26, Dolphins 20.

Rosenthal?s take: San Diego has won twice despite Philip Rivers not playing his best. I?m taking that as a good sign.? Miami can?t even win when they play well (Week One against the Patriots) or when they dominate the flow of the game (Week Three against the Browns.)

Rosenthal?s pick: Chargers 31, Dolphins 21.

Jets at Ravens

Florio?s take:? Last year, the Ravens and Jets found themselves in a Week One defensive struggle.? Look for more points this time around.? But with the Jets struggling to run and stop the run, the bulk of those points will likely be scored by the home team.

Florio?s pick:? Ravens 24, Jets 16.

Rosenthal?s take: We?re still learning about these teams. Baltimore?s offense looks more complete, but it?s hard to ignore the Week Two stinkbomb.? [Editor's note:? It's good to see that soiled diapers already are influencing Rosenthal's prose.]? The Jets defense looks less intimidating, but it?s hard to ignore Rex Ryan?s track record. Anything less than a great game will be a huge disappointment.

Rosenthal?s pick: Ravens 24, Jets 21.

Colts at Buccaneers

Florio?s take:? The Bucs return to Monday night for the first time since an epic collapse against the same team they?ll be facing.? With Jon Gruden in the broadcast booth to wallow in self-pity and generally gush about everything he sees, the team that fired him in 2009 will show the NFL that the time has come for a Tampa uprising.

Florio?s pick:? Buccaneers 34, Colts 13.

Rosenthal?s take: Josh Freeman is off to a slow start, and none of his teammates really scare you on offense. Yet Tampa is greater than the sum of its parts (again) and the Bucs have won two straight. The Colts are just missing parts, and the spare ones don?t work very well.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bucs 27, Colts 13.

Home improvement tips needed for Dubai Villa | Ibremsen Potter

If you have been carrying out some research into Dubai Property home improvement, then you may have a decent idea of what is well-known. Perhaps you could have worked out that not all you have found will apply to you. Your specific situation will influence what additional areas of study you have to consider. There is usually much more you can find and use that will be very beneficial to you. The net is massive, indeed, and it can be really aggravating if you cannot quite nail down the final pieces of the puzzle. This is some extra, and important, clues about Dubai Property home improvement that undoubtedly will serve you well.

Tips On How To Add a Garden to Your Forthcoming Landscaping Endeavor

It really is appealing to design your own Dubai Property Landscape designs, and it can be quite a challenge, too. Here are a few sensible suggestions, in case you are thinking about doing such a project.

Most significantly, planning the style needs to be your first step. Based on what you would like to be part of your design, you need to collect all of the information before you make any decisions. A few of the factors you need to know tend to be, whether you want a patio, a deck, walkways, or a pond. Additionally, there will be a huge assortment of flowers, plants and trees from which to select. To help with your preparation, get a few landscaping magazines, and look online for books and articles. This sort of investigation will be well worth your while, simply because when all is said and done you will have saved money, effort and time, and have a great looking yard.

If you get all of the analysis finished, the next step will be the design of your Dubai Property Landscape. Preferably, if you?ve got the capability, the smartest thing you can do is build an exact scale model. You can find lots of step-by-step guides, showing you how to get this done, and they are available on the internet for free. You have to place all your design elements on your layout pad, but this really is only the preliminary plan, which can always be changed. However, because everything is still just in writing, maybe a little experimentation is in order. Consider the consequences of the seasonal changes in your region ? a well planned design will look good no matter what time of year it is. An additional essential factor in your design would be that the Dubai Property Landscape should be as free of maintenance as possible.

While this is all appropriate to your discovery, a few items about Dubai Properties carry more weight than others. But in the final analysis you are the only person who can accurately make that call. Yet you do understand there is much more to be discovered about this. We are keeping the best for last, and you will be pleased at what you will find out. What you are about to read will significantly enhance your knowledge, and we will go even beyond that point, too.

Lots of people have a problem visualizing what their Dubai Property Landscape is going to look like when it is finished, and that?s where a Dubai Property Landscape design software program comes in handy. This kind of application displays virtual pictures of what your yard will actually look like, and it allows you to shuffle things around until you?ve got it all just right. You can use a photo of your home, which is imported into the software, and the software then designs the Dubai Property Landscape around the photo. A lot of the programs give you advice on placing the different elements. Some programs even let you see how things will change as time passes and everything ages and grows. Being able to look into the future permits you to make alterations now, so everything will keep looking good as the years go by.

For many of us, a garden is the main focus in our design plan. It can be placed anywhere, just so it blends well with your overall scheme. This may mean tucking your garden away so that it?s like a hidden gem. If gardening is something you like to do, make sure that you don?t overlook all of the possibilities in designing your garden.

These are the kinds of approaches that can be put to good use as you see fit. But keep in mind as it concerns Property Dubai DIY that you have to realize what you are dealing with. We all have found information through search that is not 100% trustworthy. Although we do believe most content writers have totally genuine goals when they write. What is up next really can have an effect on your unique outcomes.

(AP) ? Bolivia's interior minister and his deputy resigned Tuesday after mounting recriminations over a violent police crackdown on marchers opposed to a jungle highway that they say would despoil an indigenous preserve.

Interior Minister Sacha Llorenti became the second Cabinet member to step down over the weekend action, which backfired as angry crowds pressured police into releasing the hundreds of protesters they had detained.

Defense Minister Cecilia Chacon resigned in protest immediately after Sunday's crackdown by about 500 police officers who fired tear gas and wielded clubs in the eastern lowlands.

The backlash is a major setback for President Evo Morales, who by stubbornly insisting on the 190-mile (300-kilometer) jungle highway had alienated many of his indigenous core supporters in this poor, landlocked nation where more than two in three people are members of indigenous groups.

Morales announced Monday that he was suspending the Brazil-funded highway and leaving it to voters in the two affected regions to decide its fate.

Llorenti had initially defended the crackdown and denied excessive force was used.

But before resigning on Tuesday he said neither he nor Morales had ordered the police against the marchers. He blamed Deputy Minister Marcos Farfan, who resigned to take responsibility but also denied ordering the police action.

The director of Bolivia's migration agency, Maria Rene Quiroga, resigned Tuesday to protest the breakup of the march by some 1,000 people who departed the provincial capital of Trinidad in mid-August on foot bound for the highlands capital of La Paz.

It was not clear how many people were injured or how seriously during Sunday's clash.

Morales has been an impassioned champion of the campaign to curb global warming but is seen as less environmentally friendly at home for insisting on building the highway through the 600-square-mile (12,000-square-kilometer) Isiboro-Secure Indigenous Territory National Park. It is home to 15,000 indigenous people who live off hunting, fishing, gathering fruit and subsistence farming.

Park inhabitants fear the road would bring an influx of settlers who would destroy their habitat by felling trees and polluting rivers.

Environmentalists say the road would mostly benefit Brazilian commercial interests such as timber exporters while endangering a pristine nature preserve.

Morales, an Aymara Indian who is Bolivia's first indigenous president, has been fiercely criticized as turning a deaf ear to those who re-elected him by a landslide in 2009.

The president, who is also leader Bolivia's coca growers union, has seen his support in opinion polls fall to 37 percent, its second-lowest level since he was first elected in 2005.

Later Tuesday, Morales named Ruben Saavedra, a former defense minister, to take on that post again. Saavedra has been head of the Strategic Office of Maritime Access, an agency that was created by presidential decree last spring to work on regaining access to the Pacific that Bolivia lost in a war with Chile in the late 19th century.

Wilfredo Chavez, who has been deputy minister of government coordination, was sworn in as the new interior minister.

It is the first part of any therapy program and is necessary for the best success of other pieces such as therapy sessions and after care. There are many approaches in which these centres can assist you with the purification procedure.

Is There a Way to Get Out of Going to a Detox Center?

The process of recuperating from substance craving is not an easy process. You may need to front many obstacles to accomplish your goal. Along with the herb choices, a well balanced eating plan featuring vegetables, fresh fruits, soups and juices are also integrated. When put together with physical exercise and plenty of water, they are proved to be effective in blocking withdrawal manifestations.

Another process used by detox centers is medical detox. It is usually doctor prescribed for individuals who have other physical and mental health difficulties. Natural detox may not be enough in these cases. Close monitoring is necessary, and the user may need prescribed medicines like Klonepin to reduce the withdrawal symptoms. Vital signs are checked regularly, and further psychological reinforcement is given. This kind of treatment method will usually extend for 3 to seven days.

Rapid detox is yet another approach used to remove harmful toxins from the body. The user is given typical sedation and medicines are administered to carry out the procedure rapidly. It can continue from a couple hours and is viewed as a swift recovery procedure. But, the patient would require counseling and other support courses to complete the process of healing.

Noticeably, the detox centers will allow you to select the best method of cleansing and recover without risk.

Jewelers want states to replace limits on cadmium

Federal regulators will, however, use the limits in deciding whether to pursue recalls. (AP Photo/U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, File)

(AP) ? The U.S jewelry industry wants states to overturn laws that limit the toxic metal cadmium in children's trinkets and adopt new voluntary guidelines it helped create, saying stricter rules in several states create chaos for manufacturers and importers.

Persuading legislators to reopen the issue won't be an easy sell: Many consumer and environmental advocates say the new guidelines weaken protection of children's health.

While the voluntary rules have the support of federal regulators, states that passed much stricter limits over the past year would have to backtrack and allow higher levels of a metal that can cause cancer.

That didn't sound likely Monday.

"Maryland ought to set whatever standard we feel is correct," said Delegate James Hubbard, a Democrat who successfully sponsored the nation's toughest cadmium-in-jewelry limits this spring. "We made a judgment call based on what we felt was in the best interest of the people we represent."

A jewelry industry that has been hammered by more than a year of recalls and legal setbacks does have some momentum, now that the rules it drafted were passed last week by the respected organization ASTM International, which sets voluntary rules for a range of goods. Industry's goal is to replace the current patchwork of regulation with a unified standard.

"Our whole mission in this is to have standards that are not floating in quicksand," said Brent Cleaveland, head of the ASTM subcommittee that wrote the rules and executive director of the Fashion Jewelry and Accessories Trade Association. He described the limits he oversaw as "way more conservative than necessary" to protect kids' health.

Cleaveland says his next move is to press legislatures in states that have set limits to reopen the issue and adopt the voluntary standards. If that succeeds, Cleaveland would then ask Congress to pass legislation to make the voluntary standard national law.

If the industry lobbying effort fails, state limits that are much tougher than the voluntary rules will effectively remain the national standard. That's because manufacturers that sell in places like California and Maryland would need to comply with limits there, and wouldn't create different products for the rest of the country.

Mandatory limits adopted over the past year already deter use of the heavy metal, which over time can also cause bone and kidney diseases, though there have been no documented deaths or serious injuries.

While the voluntary standards don't trump limits from states and legal settlements, they do create a consensus national standard that jewelry manufacturers and importers endorse.

Because the limits are voluntary, there is no automatic penalty for jewelry sold with cadmium levels exceeding them. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission will, however, use the limits in deciding whether to pursue product recalls.

The agency has argued that voluntary limits were the appropriate ? and fastest ? way to create a common understanding of what constitutes a problem piece of jewelry. The agency said that unless it finds widespread failure to comply, it will not seek mandatory rules.

In response to an Associated Press investigation, the Consumer Product Safety Commission helped recall about 300,000 pieces of high-cadmium necklaces, bracelet and rings last year. The AP reported that some of the jewelry contained more than 90 percent cadmium and would release alarmingly high levels of the metal into stomach acid if swallowed.

Problem jewelry, typically made in China, was available across the marketplace, from Walmarts to chain stores specializing in jewelry to dollar-type shops.

Five recalls were done before the agency decided how to handle the problem. By last fall, guidelines were in place for how to identify a hazardous piece of jewelry based on lab testing that mimicked how much cadmium would enter a child's body from jewelry that was licked or swallowed. In that process, the agency more than tripled its estimate of how much cadmium a child could safely ingest.

Jewelry test results above those levels may ? or may not ? trigger the agency to ask businesses to yank an item from their shelves.

It wasn't just fuzzy federal guidelines that drove the jewelry industry to seek predictable rules. Importers and manufacturers had to comply with new testing demands from retailers, the varying limits imposed by California, Maryland and three other states, as well as a limit that was established when major retailers recently settled a lawsuit with environmentalists.

Aside from California and Maryland, there are cadmium laws in Connecticut, Illinois and Minnesota. Legislation is pending in other states, including Massachusetts, New York and Florida.

A compromise approach was overwhelmingly endorsed by the panel Cleaveland led, which included consumer advocates, retailers and representatives of testing labs.

The full ASTM committee on consumer products approved the standard, which also addresses other potential jewelry hazards, such as lead and magnets.

Under the ASTM approach, children's jewelry ? defined as items "primarily intended" for kids 12 and under ? would first be lab tested to see whether it contains more than 0.03 percent cadmium.

Items that failed the "total content" test could be scrapped or sent for further analysis. For smaller pieces, a second test gauges how much cadmium would dissolve into stomach acid a day after the jewelry was swallowed; for larger pieces, an additional test measures how much cadmium escapes under conditions that simulate licking.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission supports this approach ? indeed, the ASTM standard borrows heavily from the agency's safety levels and test methods.

"ASTM's approval of a new cadmium standard for children's jewelry is a positive step forward," the agency's chairman, Inez Tenenbaum, said in a written statement. "It is very important for ASTM to also complete their work and publish the new cadmium standard for toys as soon as possible."

The standard may take effect by early November.

Industry had wanted the stomach acid test to last just two hours, but eventually agreed to the 24 hours the Consumer Product Safety Commission advocated. On the other side, the CPSC rejected the approach preferred by environmentalists and consumer advocates, who favor a standard based solely on how much cadmium jewelry contains, not how much it might release.

Total content is how the agency currently regulates lead, the metal that some jewelry makers abandoned in favor of cadmium after Congress passed strict lead limits in 2008.

While the ASTM committee resoundingly endorsed the new voluntary limits, there were dissenters.

The principal one was Caroline Cox, research director at the Center for Environmental Health. Her Oakland-based organization found cadmium in jewelry at dozens of stores, and earlier this month settled legal cases against chains including Target Corp. and Gap Inc., which agreed not to sell jewelry with more than 0.03 percent cadmium, even if very little leached out.

Cox argued that pieces of new jewelry that might fare fine in an initial stomach acid test might prove far more dangerous? if swallowed following months of wear and tear. Testing has shown that as electroplating wears down, or if a piece of jewelry's surface is punctured, cadmium inside can leach out at much greater levels.

If the standard were based solely on a limit of 0.03 percent cadmium, "We don't want to have to worry about all that," Cox said. "Let's just set a total content standard from the beginning that takes care of the problem."

Maryland and Connecticut based their limits on total content; in both states, children's jewelry which exceeds 0.0075 percent cadmium would be illegal based on laws that go into effect in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

"When we've passed something, there's a hesitancy to go back and change it, particularly when you are the most strict," said Conn. Rep. Pam Sawyer, a Republican and co-sponsor of the state's legislation. For Connecticut to begin allowing jewelry with cadmium levels that are four times higher than current law, she said, would "raise some eyebrows."

Mohamed A. El-Erian: Volatility Is With Us for Awhile Longer

Last week, investors suffered an average market decline of 6.5% in the equity component of their 401Ks, the largest fall since the dark days of October 2008. With $1 trillion of paper wealth evaporating in the process, they enter this week with a mix of apprehension and concern, and rightly so.

Once again, bad company news was not the reason for the market debacle. The corporate sector remains in great financial shape with lots of cash on hand and a favorable debt profile. But, like others with healthy balance sheets in the global economy (and there are quite a few sectors), companies' willingness to hire and invest awaits better policymaking in both America and Europe.

There were three culprits for last week's market dramatic sell-off: first, yet another downgrading of the outlook for global growth, including in the form of a stark warning from the Federal Reserve on "significant" downside risks (and, for an institution that selects its words very carefully, significant translates to something nearer to horrid); second, recognition that this situation increases the challenges facing policymakers who, for the large part, have been MIA for way too long; and third, a worrisome amplification of the crisis in Europe.

So much for last week; how about this week?

Whether they like it or not, and they do not like it, the global economy and markets will remain in the backseat of a car being driven very erratically by policymakers.

Some of the drivers are yet to explain fully enough where the car is headed. Most seem more interested in arguing among themselves than in looking through the windshield. And the car has used up almost all of its spare tires.

This is especially the case in Europe where policymakers have little -- and I stress, little -- time left to get their act together. Remember, their dithering and bickering has already allowed the crisis in Greece to spread to far too many parts of the Eurozone.

It is also the case in America, though to a lesser extent. President Obama's important September 8th speech is yet to sufficiently galvanize the nation and, critically, it has not received meaningful support from Capitol Hill.

These issues were discussed repeatedly this weekend in Washington DC where officials from nearly 190 countries came to attend the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank. Think of it as a group therapy session.

The discussions were robust and frank; and there was widespread realization that bold policy actions were urgently needed to avoid a further deterioration of economic growth, job creation, and income and wealth distribution.

However, as of Sunday afternoon, there was still too little progress given the severity of the global situation. Specifically, no detailed agreement had emerged on the specifics of the solution; and the political context on both sides of the Atlantic is not yet conducive enough for their implementation.

Because of this, frequent bouts of extreme volatility are unlikely to disappear any time soon. Brace yourself for another week in which markets fluctuate wildly in response to any and all signs of policy movements, both forward and back. And this will remain the case as long as both the global economy and markets lack proper policy anchoring in America and Europe, the two biggest economic zones in the world.

The longer it takes for policymakers to get their act together, the more likely that economic and market fragility will increase, the banking system in Europe will become even more vulnerable, and investors will join the growing number of companies that prefer to stand on the side of the road rather than be stuck in an erratically-driven car.

Libya promises inquiry into abuse claims (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Libya's acting prime minister is promising an investigation into the mistreatment of foreigners at the hands of rebels there.

Mahmoud Jibril says some foreigners have been abused since the rebels took control of the country after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi.

He said Friday there will be an inquiry into what happened and the root causes of the abuse.

Human Rights Watch has said there have been widespread arrests and frequent abuse of migrant workers since the rebels seized Tripoli late last month.

Some foreign workers have been accused of supporting Gadhafi during the fighting.

Jibril heads the National Transitional Council. He says a new Cabinet should be chosen next week.

Super: The Movie Review

A reviewgitation?with
Direcow Avatar Direcow,Kakita Avatar Kakita and Korgath Avatar Korgath

When April 1st came and left, at least one of us feared that yet another genre film might go the way of last year?s Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Fortunately, Super finally receives its local premiere thanks to this year?s Singapore International Film Festival.

It is oddly poetic to be reviewing Super, a film that many critics compare to Kick-Ass in it?s premise. Our site?s first Reviewgitation was for Kick-Ass and while there are some surface similarities, the two films could not be more different. While we loved the execution of the concept of a everyday superhero in Kick-Ass, we could not quite agree if the same could be said of Super.

Kakita Avatar In Super, Frank (Rainn Wilson) is your normal everyday man, whose wife (Liv Tyler) falls in with bad folk (such as the inimitable Kevin Bacon). It seems like something inside him snaps, and he sees the voice of god telling him to go be a superhero. Along the way Frank (as the Crimson Bolt) gets a fangirl-slash-girl sidekick, in the form of Ellen Page?s Libbie/Boltie.

Direcow Avatar I guess it?s hard to avoid the comparisons with Kick-Ass, after all, there is only so much distance from Kick-Ass you can get when you talk about ordinary people becoming superheroes, but that?s as far as the comparison goes ? they both veer off in very different directions..

Kakita Avatar It might be similar to Kick-Ass, but it?s even past that on the ?real life? and ?violence? scale. In Kick-Ass the heroes were still arguably heroes; going up against criminals and druglords. Super contends with druglords too, but they happily cave in the heads of line cutters and petty vandals too. And everyone around ends up asking if the superheroes in Super are vigilantes or just over exuberant, overly violent maniacs.

Direcow Avatar Definitely ? the violence is remarkably toned down in Kick-Ass compared to Super. Here the violence is a huge part of what makes Super work, in terms of understanding the psyche of the world the people live in. Which is troublesome, really, given how close the movie toes the line between superheroic fantasties and realism ? close enough to trip up and fall over. Hysterical things happen, and we laugh to bits, but then we?re faced with things like something akin to male rape, actual visceral violence and all other things which don?t happen in a ?comic book movie?. Some might argue that it is making it more grounded or edgy, but honestly it just feels like two world being smashed together that doesn?t really like that.

Korgath Avatar Unfortunately, this requirement to suspend disbelief was exacerbated further when the movie ends up evading explanations for certain unrealistic plot devices ? like where does he earn all the money to go shopping for firearms?

Kakita Avatar Exactly. I don?t mind comedy, and I don?t mind violence (be it serious or tarantino-esque), but when it?s mixed together I don?t know what to think. It doesn?t help that sometimes the violent scenes are accompanied by a child?s colouring sound balloon (POW! THWACK!)? I can?t tell if the movie is trying to be light hearted/self censor or if something very wrong is happening in Frank?s head. And we know that?s a possibility, what with him getting visions all the time.

Direcow Avatar I think it?s quite safe to say that you should not expect a very even tonality throughout the movie ? it appears that director James Gunn had trouble reconciling both what he wanted to do, and what he had to do.

Ellen Page and Rainn Wilson in Super

Korgath Avatar Agreed. I thought the use of stereotyped comic-book typography seemed extremely out of place in a movie that had, for the most part, been extremely grounded in reality. It was especially jarring at the climatic action sequence, and did little to distract from the massive violence we had endured up till that point.

Kakita Avatar Ellen Page?s Libby/Boltie character is just as worrying. Starting off as a comic store girl, she helps Frank with his superhero research and eventually becomes Crimson Bolt?s very own sidekick; Boltie. It?s only when she starts helping fight crime by assaulting a petty vandal that Frank finds out what he?s gotten himself into.

Direcow Avatar But that being said, Ellen Page really brings all that she has to this role. She?s crazy and hyperkinetic and all kinds of weird and it even gets a little too weird at times, but with all the earnestness she brings to the role it?s hard not to like her. You do see where her character is going, so it?s not much of a character arc, but you do have to applaud her for going all out ? and for being all X23.

Kakita Avatar Ha! And it?s nice to see a role reversal on the whole Batman-Robin relationship dynamic.

While I REALLY want to like her (and I do!) she gets worryingly psychotic how happy she is stabbing a bad guy?s face in. Or how hot and bothered she gets when wearing a costume. Heroes aren?t supposed to do that. But I guess that?s why it?s called Super and not Hero.
Korgath Avatar I think Libby?s personality (played to perfection by Page) further seeks to ground Frank D?Arbo by ironically making him appear sane in comparison, despite his supposedly God-given agenda and ludicrous origin story. By teaming up with a complete basketcase, D?Arbo immediately becomes more relatable and sympathetic.

Kudos too must be given to Wilson for carrying the whole film, and being believable as both a loving husband who would do anything to get his wife back, as well as a crazed, sadistic, pipe wrench-wielding vigilante.

Direcow Avatar We?ve seen Wilson do crazy often in The Office, so strangely we get to see another side of him we don?t usually do, albeit still crazy ? and I did leave the movie with more appreciation of his work. Going home to watch the latest season of The Office did end up feeling a bit weird seeing him back as Dwight.

Korgath Avatar Unfortunately, aside from these two, the remainder of the cast leave much to be desired. Though Bacon is throughly comfortable with chewing up every scene he?s in, he isn?t given much to do and ultimately comes across no better than a two-bit crook. Even worse are the appearances by Andre Royo (last seen in Fringe as the cab driver that helps Olivia in the parallel universe) who doesn?t do much in his diner scenes with Wilson, and by Linda Cardellini (aka Velma from the Scooby movies) whose throwaway role was a blank-and-miss cameo as the per store owner.

Direcow Avatar Yeah. Admittedly it was a Rainn Wilson vehicle ? but with such a strong cast one does wish it could have done it a bit better. Bacon was, to me, great? but he could possibly just phone it in if he wanted to, given how often he?s done roles like this.

And of course, let?s not forget Nathan Fillion doing Captain Hammer once again, but better.

Kakita Avatar Moving back to the ?too schizophrenic for its own good? topic, I really felt that way at the end. It started off mainly as a comedy, and then took a dangerous turn into serious and violent towards the end. I would have been happy if they kept that track till the end, but I feel like we got shortchanged with Frank?s ending. Yes it?s not a ?happy ending? per se, but it?s still a lot happier than it deserved to be.

Korgath Avatar Super is not a traditional comedy, that much is obvious, and the black humour that permeates throughout could be seen as a retrospective discussion on the plausibility of comic book tropes that we have come to accept, even in shows like Kick-Ass that have attempted to undermine the genre.

Case in point, the reference to Batman as a guide for the wannabe-costumed crusader ? someone who relies purely on tools and weapons to compensate for the lack of superpowers. Presumably, Bats? ever-increasing popularity is due to the fact that he is the most realistic and relatable comic book character. Super takes that to an extreme, making us question why we can accept and endorse Batman?s violence as necessary, but the Crimson Bolt?s violence as excessive.

To that end, I believe Super had the stronger narrative compared to Kick-Ass, but unfortunately James Gunn did not have the storytelling chops of Matthew Vaughn and the movie ended up filled with scenes that were just too violent for the regular viewer.
Direcow Avatar I don?t really think it?s the violence that really does the movie in, but the disjointedness in which it is executed. Let?s not forget a lot of the movies these days have way worse violence than what was shown here. Nonetheless, we could see what they were trying to do ? and as a comic book fan I did appreciate all the little shout-outs they had, especially when Ellen Page was the one doing most of it. And unlike Kick-Ass, the little injokes did not alienate too much of the audience.

Kakita Avatar In the end, it boils down to ?what do you think of the movie?? And well.. I enjoyed the comedy, and I enjoyed the dark and gritty violence. But I?m not sure if I could enjoy them both in the same movie.

5.5/10

That being said, catch it if you?re a superhero fan, and especially if you?re a Nathon Fillion fan. His cameo is probbaly worth the price of admission.
Korgath Avatar I?ll admit I was really looking forward to this movie, since I posted about it at the start of the year, even to the point of taking leave to ensure that I?d be able to catch it tonight. I had my doubts about a show written and directed by James Gunn, but was hoping the combined awesomeness of Wilson and Page would overcome it.

7/10

Unfortunately it didn?t, and Super squandered a perfect opportunity to tell a compelling story by succumbing to the temptation to make violence porn first chance they got.

Direcow Avatar Well, I think we?re quite agreed in terms of the tonality ? but that being said I did have fun watching the movie. Parts of it shone really brightly, and for that I did enjoy it.

7/10

BeantownEats {We Eat It. You Read It.} ? Boston MA Food and Drink ...

Jon is a very good cook. Turn him loose in the kitchen with a fridge full of ingredients and 99% of the time he will whip up something delicious. And do so without using a recipe. There are two things in particular that he truly excels at cooking: chicken and fish. On a night when both of us were craving something light and healthy, Jon made beautifully cooked fish with tasty skillet potatoes and a simple green salad.

Skillet Potatoes

Quick note: You have to start these first because the cooking time is around 45 minutes (but totally worth it!).?

Turn oven to 450 degrees and place empty cast iron skillet in oven to heat up.? Wash petite potatoes, dry well and poke with a fork.? Cut into small, even pieces.? Cover with olive oil, thyme, rosemary, paprika, salt and pepper (or any other spices that you like).

When oven is preheated, pour seasoned potatoes into the cask iron skillet.? (They should sizzle.)? Lower over temperature to 400 degrees.

Give a quick toss every ten minutes until they are soft, and as crispy as you like them.

Pan-Seared Spicy Haddock

Quick note: The fish will cook quickly, so make sure potatoes are mostly done when you start the fish.

Fill non-stick saut? pan with liberal amount of olive oil over medium-low heat. Add chopped garlic (it?s OK if it?s from a jar) and red chili flakes (to your desired degree of heat, but remember a little goes a long way!).

Season fish with salt, pepper and Chef Prudhommes? Seafood Magic seasoning.

When oil has infused, place fish in pan, skin side up.

Cook time will depend on the thickness of your fish, and true temperature of your stove burner. (Jon cooked these pieces for about 4 minutes on the first side.)? Flip over and continue cooking for about 2 minutes longer, or until the white is all the way through and flakes with ease.

Simple Salad

Quick note: We like to make our own salad dressings.? Using fresh ingredients like olive oil and lemon juice eliminate the need for preservatives found in so many store-bought dressings.?

The key to this salad is the dressing.? Jon wanted something light to go with the fish, so I made a simple dressing with olive oil and lemon juice.? To this, I added anchovy paste, both for seasoning and as a way to thicken the dressing, a dash of thyme and a lot of pepper.? (I don?t recommend adding salt like I normally would due to the inherent saltiness of the anchovy paste.)

Rosemary Bread

A quick and easy way to make a regular store-bought loaf taste fresh from the bakery: Cut slits in the top of the loaf and drizzle with olive oil.? Sprinkle crushed rosemary and a little bit of salt on the top.? Bake in foil until the bread just starts to get a nice crust on top.

Plate your dinner and enjoy!!

What?s your favorite way to cook fish?

Thad McCotter owned up to being "bummed" about REM's breakup Wednesday, but was his depression enough to drive him from the 2012 Republican primary race?

The Michigan congressman tells the Detroit News this afternoon he's dropping out of the primary and throwing his support to rival Mitt Romney, whom he's repeatedly likened to President Obama in recent months.

Once again, you have an essential role in the Game Changers process: voting to determine the Ultimate Game Changer in each category. To salute our honorees, and help you decide who to vote for, we've put together slideshows giving you the lowdown on who we picked, why we picked them, and how they are changing the game.

It's always fun to see who you vote for. Last year's Ultimate Game Changers included familiar names like Steve Jobs (Technology), Elizabeth Warren (Politics), and Paul Volcker (Business) -- but there were also more than a few surprises.

For instance, despite the presence of a number of superstar athletes in Sports, you voted in Amy Palmiero-Winters & Catherine Hughes, two below-the-knee amputees who showed that disabilities need not be an end to dreams of athletic triumph. And while our Style Game Changers included style and fashion icons such as Tom Ford and Paulina Porizkova, and red carpet regulars Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, you selected Joe Bozich, who runs a garment factory in the Dominican Republic that pays its workers a living wage.

We'll be rolling out three new categories each week, starting today with Green, Politics, and Media. Click on a category to see the slideshow and cast your vote. Then share your picks with your friends -- and see if they choose the same Game Changers as you.

We'll announce the 12 Ultimate Game Changers after the voting closes in mid-October, when we'll be hosting an event in New York to celebrate all our Game Changers. Last year's event included appearances and speeches by Sean Penn, Anderson Cooper, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Ted Olson, Biz and Livia Stone, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Nora Ephron.

This year, we're doubling down on user engagement by inviting you all to submit the story of the "Game Changer in your life" -- and get a shot at winning a trip to New York to join us at what promises to be a memorable event. Click here for more details.

So check out this week's Game Changers candidates in Green, Politics, and Media, and start voting. Make sure your favorite in each category becomes an Ultimate Game Changer... and maybe we'll see you in New York next month!

Wyse PocketCloud hits emerging mobile cloud market (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? U.S.-based Wyse Technology has rolled out a new version of its PocketCloud application, enabling free sharing of music and videos between consumers' mobile devices.

Instead of saving content on far-away servers and then downloading it every time across mobile telecom networks when it is used, PocketCloud links devices with each other.

Research firm Juniper expects the annual consumer market for remote, or cloud, mobile services to grow to $6.5 billion by 2016 as technology industry heavyweights Amazon, Google and Apple boost their presence.

Juniper expects music and video storage or acquisition services such as Amazon's Cloud Drive and the forthcoming Apple iCloud to gain rapid traction with substantial adoption on phones and tablets.

The new mobile cloud services will further increase pressure on already-strained wireless networks as telecom operators are struggling to keep up with surging data growth.

"Networks are going to crumble under the pressure of serving cloud based content. We are going to see a lot more peer-to-peer services such as this being implemented to overcome capacity issues," said Ben Wood, head of research at British consultancy CCS Insight.

Wyse -- whose core business is selling services to corporations -- is moving early in the consumer market with its network-friendly approach, and pricing the service at $1.00 a month, while comparable services cost well above $100 a year.

"There is a great opportunity," said David Nagy, director of product marketing for Wyse's mobile cloud business unit. "We don't have a data center and we have a relatively small team."

Wyse launched the new personal cloud offering for Apple devices on Wednesday, but it plans to further expand it to devices using Google's Android software.
