Decoupling Intimacy and Commitment | The Badger Hut

Infantry, the star of my last post?for his comments on ?beta hate,? left a comment there?about the risk of habituating into an intimacy-averse mindset:

Something I?d like to see you talk about it is the way that a long term dedication to game, abundance mentality and ?not chasing? can lead to intimacy avoidance. Back in my blue pill days I always used to wonder about guys with ?commitment issues? and why they would ever want to cut away from getting close to a girl. Now I know why.

If you get close to a girl and feel that you don?t have the ?upper hand? in your relationship, you reflexively pull back and try to cut ties to avoid oneitis. The girl must think ?he really likes me, so why did he disappear??.

It?s one of those long term issues that I?ve become aware of recently and its only really a problem if you got into game to eventually attract a woman for a long term partnership (like me). When you?ve spent so long training yourself to cut away, how can you really get close to someone?

I?m not here to blow smoke up anybody?s ass, so I?ll be honest ? this is an occupational hazard of getting into the game.

You do need to look at this as a complete tradeoff ? in betaland, you have a desire for emotional comfort and intimacy and an almost uncontrollable urge to seek it out, yet exactly because of those factors you cannot get it and you go uncomforted by the woman?s touch. In alphaland, you?ve conditioned yourself to suppress those desires and urges, but you are in a position to attract women to meet your needs.

This is not a doomsday scenario, as plenty of guys get on the game train and hop back off when they?ve attracted a woman worth keeping and built enough skill to be confident they can keep her.?(Regular commenter Mike C is one of them, who left the operational scene very quickly when he decided the woman he was with was of high quality and worth his investment.)

If you?re paying attention, your next question is likely to be, but why??Why is their a dichotomous split between no emotion (or faking emotion) and going overboard and scaring the gals away?

The thoughts here give prose to a number of concepts I?ve been formulating as I?ve taken a deep analytical look at today?s sexual marketplace and in particular its sexually detached hookup subculture. I have detailed thoughts on the female side of the predicament, but in keeping with Infantry?s concern I?m going to stick to the guys for the moment.

Commented Wudang got my neurons going with his comment to Infantry:

?this post by Xsplat for good thinking on intimacy and closeness. Men need to learn to feel strongly without crumbling.?

Xsplat?s post is a fantastic riff on exactly what it says it is ? that you don?t have to deny your intimate side and be Mr. Robot to be an effective, sexual man.

A huge part of seduction is about intimacy. All of us crave it. For most people it is a peak experience. But for you it doesn?t have to be. It can be your modus operandi.

Forget about being aloof. Intimacy is women?s kryptonite. You can make them weak in the knees with a look.

I?d have to work to remember how many girls I?ve moved in on the first date. How many I connected with from the get go as if we?d been long time lovers. How easy it?s been to just connect. I?ve never tried to be aloof. I?m a passionate man. This personal style has never been a hindrance ? it has been my greatest strength.

DON?T COUNT ON INTIMACY AS A HARBINGER OF COMMITMENT, BUT RATHER AS A NORMAL MALE NEED

Xsplat?s post title ? ?intimacy without commitment? ? brings up an interesting point. For the last generation, women have counseled one another as to how to distinguish guys who want sex vs guys who want sex and other things. They?ve always broken this down on the basis of intimacy ? does he stick around after sex, eats meals, do you meet his parents, does he talk about his feelings, etc.

But lately, women have been flummoxed as these rules seem to be breaking down. ?I don?t get it, we sleep together, eat together, we hang out with his friends, but he says I?m not his girlfriend. He doesn?t talk about planning the future. But he does everything I?d expect a boyfriend to do. Is he just in it for the sex? Is this a ruse? WTF??

What?s really going on, laid bare, is that the man enjoys intimacy, and ? in what is the really distinctive characteristic of today?s sexual marketplace ? he doesn?t feel the need to put some amorphous concept of ?commitment? underneath it.

(Another factor here is that women have raised the costs and expectations of a ?relationship? to very high levels, such that men are wary of putting the ?relationship? label on things so as to avoid the subtextual obligations. Thus men may steer towards ?friends with benefits? arrangements that, far from being booty calls, are relationships in everything but name. A tertiary factor is that men have noticed women?s ability to get out of relationships with almost zero cost to themselves, and are not eager to sign up for an ontological designation that introduces such an?asymmetry.)

Underlying this confusion on the part of women is that women have been taught that men DON?T have active emotional centers and DON?T desire intimacy and possibly that emotional investment is just a con that men pull to secure sexual access. So this male behavior makes no sense, because they have a bogus model.

I see this ?indefinite term relationship? as an outcome of a few combined factors, the most prominent being Boomerism and the accelerating sequelae of the sexual revolution.

In short, first we decoupled sex from commitment, which resulted in mainstream effects like one-night stands and booty calls and excesses like ?free love? communities. Now we?re decoupling intimacy from ?commitment,? reflected in endless engagements and fully-ornamented no-term relationships. And a lot of men are finding that?s a pretty good deal.

Now to the core of the discussion.

GEN Y WAS DEPRIVED OF THE TOOLS FOR SOUND EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION

Part of the reason for this decoupling is that Millenial men were raised by Boomer parents who sought to act more as friends than as parental figures, so Millenials could never emotionally mature and become masters of a healthy emotional system, because they were carrying the emotional immaturity of their parents. Combine that with the beta-ization of Gen Y boys (partially attributable to aggressive feminism, but also to a general trend of a ?kinder and gentler? society) and you find a generation of young men who have been denied the means to meet their basic emotional and bonding needs.

This is one large reason we see so much needy behavior*.?Parents probably thought they were teaching their kids to be emotionally open, but they really just washed them in an orgasm of affect of which they couldn?t make any sense. Boys and men were isolated from the male authority ladder they require to develop from boys to teens to men, and denied the dignity of their own masculinity, inducing further shame and self-doubt.?So they seek emotional context and comfort where it appears to present itself, which to them is women, who are presented in popular culture as the font of goodness and acceptance. But they?re like a hungry man exposed to a storehouse of food, unable to eat in any fashion other than gorging.

(*By the same token, I find today?s young women unable to relate to men of normal emotional range, which they interpret as insecurity and impending neediness ? an emotional trap for their own immature affective systems that they are desperate to avoid.?This explains their preferential and often exclusive attraction to men who overtly display a lack of the emotional vocabulary that is the mark of the unforigveable beta ? in other words, the guys act like jerks, and the women take it as a signal of emotional security, while the rest of the guys are pre-emptively rejected or go completely unnoticed under the assumption they are incipient emotional vampires.?This will be discussed at length in a future post.)

IF YOU?RE SEXY YOU?RE ALLOWED TO BE EMOTIONAL

And of course, because we live in a tingle-first society, the only way for a man to get this intimacy that is his fundamental need is to be sexually attractive and to be under emotional control.?There IS no emotional intimacy available to a man today unless he is able to sexually attract a woman. He can?t hope to parlay paper-alpha status and beta traits into an audition period in which her respect and attraction can grow. He?s gotta have it up front, or he?ll get the ?well it was nice meeting you? and the posthumous ?there just wasn?t any spark? speech she gives to her friends. As Athol Kay put it:

There?s probably not a single man reading this blog who hasn?t had his heart ripped out by a woman rejecting him for his lack of Game at some point in his life. Many of the male readers of this blog are in sexless marriages too. So learning Game is pure and simple?a requirement?for the average guy dealing with women. We?re learning it to simply be able to?have?a relationship with women.

Despite women?s plaintive cries for men who will resonate emotionally with them, men have been consistently punished for seeking to meet their emotional needs as a primary mechanism of relating to women. I?m not going to get into a moral judgment, both sides are understandable. But clever men notice the negative outcomes and veer in the emotionally stunted direction intentionally, which crystallizes into a paradox where they can acquire the furiously sought emotional contact they are no longer in a condition to receive. Which loops us back to the problem that Infantry and Wudang speak of at the top of this post.

In conclusion: long-term commitment and its obligations are decoupling from sex, intimacy and the other benefits of relationships, due to a host of reasons?relating to poor emotional rearing, a broken and disrespected ?commitment? system, and a sexually atomized society. Game is a partial solution to the male problem of getting sexual attention which is a prerequisite for acquiring emotional comfort and relationship benefits, but is not a solution IF one becomes emotionally repressed and confined in the process. For some men that?s not a big deal; for most men I wager it is, because for them it?s about a lot more than rubbing until you get off ? it?s about contact and closeness, and?being desired and respected and allowed to be vulnerable.

Oil extends rise after ECB head vows to save euro

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil extended gains Friday in Asia after the European Central Bank chief promised to do what it takes to keep the euro currency union intact and China stepped up stimulus efforts to counter its slowdown.

Benchmark crude for September delivery was up 23 cents at $89.62 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 42 cents to settle at $89.39 in New York on Thursday after earlier topping $90 per barrel.

Brent crude was up 54 cents at $105.80 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

Markets have been rattled this week by fears that Spain, the fourth-largest economy among the 17 that use the euro, could need a bailout along the lines of Greece, Ireland and Portugal because its borrowing rates have shot to unsustainable levels. That would strain Europe's finances and potentially cause the breakup of the euro. Analysts say the shockwaves from a splintering of the currency union would likely tip the world economy into recession.

At an investment conference in London, ECB President Mario Draghi pledged Thursday to do "whatever it takes to preserve the euro." He also suggested that the bank could act to lower escalating borrowing rates for financially troubled countries such as Spain and Italy.

Demand for oil in Europe has dropped as some countries have fallen into recession. Earlier this month, the International Energy Agency estimated oil demand in Europe this year at 14.6 million barrels a day, down from 15 million last year. The European Union accounts for about 16 percent of global oil use.

A possible boost for oil demand came in the form of signs that China, the world's No. 2 crude consumer, is accelerating its stimulus efforts by allowing cities to splash out on infrastructure. The inland city of Changsha announced plans to spend a whopping $130 billion. City officials said increased investment was the "inevitable choice" to counter sluggish growth but gave few details of their plans.

In other energy futures trading, natural gas was down 0.1 cent at $3.098 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil rose 0.9 cent to $2.878 a gallon and gasoline gained 1.6 cents to $2.753 a gallon.

Senegal spoil Team GB's football party

Senegal spoiled Great Britain's long-awaited return to Olympic football on Thursday, snatching a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw in a bruising encounter at Old Trafford.

Moussa Konate's 82nd minute leveller prevented Britain from making a winning start to their first appearance in an Olympic football tournament for 52 years after Craig Bellamy had fired the hosts into the lead.

Britain almost grabbed a late winner when substitute Marvin Sordell struck the woodwork two minutes from time, but Senegal held on for a share of the points after a physical Group A tussle.

It was a frustrating outcome for the hosts, who should have been awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after goalscorer Bellamy was clattered in the area in an atrocious challenge by Senegal defender Saliou Ciss.

After a slow start, Britain had taken the lead midway through the first half with captain Ryan Giggs and Bellamy combining to score.

Manchester United star Giggs, who at the age of 38 became the oldest man to play in the Olympic football competition, swung in a free-kick from the right. Steven Caulker's aerial challenge caused confusion in the Senegal box, and the ball fell kindly for Bellamy who drove an angled shot beyond Ousmane Mane.

Senegal should have equalised shortly afterwards however when a horrendous mistake from Jack Butland let in Sadio Mane.

Butland's mis-hit clearance went straight to Mane near the edge of the area, but the Senegal striker's chipped effort drifted disappointingly wide to spare the British goalkeeper's blushes.

An open second half saw both sides carve out promising opportunities but Senegal were fortunate to finish with 11 men after some uncompromising challenges went unpunished by Ravshan Irmatov.

Roll your clothes when packing your bags for a trip. Rolling your clothes up tightly actually saves a great deal of space when packing. Just make sure you begin packing, at least, several days before you need to have all your luggage ready. Rushing leads to very inefficient packing.

When you are traveling, be careful not to skip meals. If you are out sightseeing or participating in other touristic activities, you are going to need the energy. Plus, stopping and having a meal is a great way to meet locals, sample some local cuisine, and experience elements of the culture you might have otherwise missed out on.

Joining a hotel?s loyalty program can provide you with many different traveling perks. Members of these programs often get special bonuses that are not available to the general population. Some hotels offer free internet access or a free drink every morning for breakfast. Others will iron a few items of your clothing for no charge. Loyalty programs are a way to make your hotel stay a little more pleasant.

When about to travel an important resource can be talking to friends and family about where you are traveling. Often one can gain helpful information that would have not otherwise be obtained. The advantage of talking to a real person can result in beneficial information that can make all the difference between an enjoyable trip or a miserable one.

Always overestimate when it comes to travel expenses. There are always extra fees that are associated with traveling abroad, as you are consistently looking for the conveniences you are used to at home. As well, there are extra fees such as for baggage at the airport as well as fees for accommodations.

To boost your chances of getting an upgrade on your hotel room or flight seat, let clerks know about any special occasions. If you?re a newlywed, a new graduate, or even just celebrating a birthday, staff will be more likely to offer you any upgrades they have available. Be sure to be enthusiastic when letting them know so that they?ll want to help you celebrate.

Travel is a great way to see new places and to relax from the normal stresses of life. Stay relaxed during your trip so you can feel refreshed when you return to work.

Expectations fill everyone before a trip, but don?t let it all weigh you down. Make full use of the tips from the article above the next time you decide to take a trip. Give yourself some space to learn all you need to know about travel because it really pays off when you need it the most.

Policy Plate: Who's Really Funding Crop Insurance? | Environmental ...

Crop farmers are going to be OK coming out of the current drought ? but not taxpayers, economist Bruce Babcock of Iowa State University says in a National Public Radio interview.

?They?re going to be paying large losses,? Babcock said. ?The drought really shows how important the [federal crop insurance] program is, and who?s really funding it.?

Taxpayers pay, on average, 62 percent of the farmers? insurance premiums and send $1.3 billion a year to crop insurance companies to sell and service the policies. And taxpayers, not insurance companies, pick up most of the cost when insurance policies pay out ? especially during bad years.

In fact, Babcock noted last week, many farmers stand to make more money than they would if there were no drought, because of the way crop insurance works. Popular ?revenue protection? policies will allow farmers to collect a payment tied to the October ?harvest price? of their crop, rather than the price they insured their crop at when they bought their policies.? As yields fall because of the drought and crop prices rise, so too will the harvest price farmers will collect on their failed crops.

    Table Scraps:

Politico reports that Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, a top House Republican leader, said, ?Congress could move legislation to help farmers stricken by the drought? even if it can?t agree on a farm bill.

The Heritage Foundation published a brief on its website on the secrecy surrounding crop insurance premium subsidies. A 2000 law bars the government from disclosing which farmers get these subsidies, and for how much.

Environmental Working Group?s Alex Formuzis responds to an agribusiness group that doesn?t want people to have more information about pesticide residues on conventionally grown fruits and veggies.

New Biomarkers Honed to Help Search for Life on Earthlike Exoplanets

    Features | Space

Despite the cancellation of the Terrestrial Planet Finder telescope, astrobiologists are modeling possible chemical biomarkers that could be used to detect indicators of life on newfound worlds

Terrestrial Planet Finder, biomarkers, extraterrestrial life, Image: NASA Science Missions

Expectations are running high that some time next year astronomers using NASA's Kepler spacecraft will announce the discovery that planet hunters have been waiting for: the first Earth-size exoplanet found in a region around a sunlike star where life could flourish. That exoplanet will almost certainly lie too far from Earth to be scrutinized, but it will nonetheless throw into high gear a search for the fingerprints of life?the chemical compounds that could indicate whether an exoplanet in the habitable zone, the life-friendly region where liquid water can survive, actually harbors life.

But even as researchers are gaining a deeper understanding of the bio-signatures that may be present in exoplanetary atmospheres, scientists face a roadblock. A proposed NASA mission called the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF), designed to search for these compounds among planets orbiting nearby stars?those that lie about one hundredth the distance of the orbs Kepler can find?lost its funding in 2007 amid rising costs for the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble's successor.

The TPF would block the blinding glare from nearby, sunlike stars in order to take portraits of the planets that orbit them. In one scheme, a single large telescope outfitted with a mask, or coronagraph, would blot out starlight and image planets as they appear in reflected visible light. In another strategy, several telescopes flying in information would act in concert to zero out infrared light from a parent star and record the heat radiated by the star's planets at infrared wavelengths.

Light collected by the TPF and separated into its component wavelengths, or spectra, could reveal the presence of bio-signatures. Water vapor, oxygen and methane in the atmosphere of an exoplanet would offer evidence of a life-friendly environment as well as biological processes akin to photosynthesis and respiration on Earth, notes Geoff Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley.

"The galaxy may be lousy with microbial life, but currently we have no clue," he adds. "It is a tragedy of modern science that the Terrestrial Planet Finder cannot be supported, either in the U.S. or Europe, due to budget pressures."

    Bio-markup
Astronomers still hope to revive some version of TPF, but it would take a decade for the mission to get back on track, Marcy estimates. In the meantime studies by exoplanet researchers including Sara Seager of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Victoria Meadows of the University of Washington in Seattle are honing?and expanding?the list of compounds that may serve as biomarkers for exoplanets orbiting stars of different sizes and ages.

With the chances of looking for chemical markers of life beyond the solar system initially few and far between, "we want to make sure we have the best possible understanding of bio-signatures," Meadows says. "We don't want to be fooled."

Much of the new work focuses on planets orbiting M dwarf stars, which are about one-half to one-tenth the sun's mass and account for about 75 percent of all the stars in the galaxy. Because M dwarfs are much cooler than the sun, their habitable zones are only about one tenth as far from them as Earth lies from the sun.

That proximity makes it impossible for the TPF to image those planets. However, the James Webb Space Telescope, now scheduled for launch in 2018, has a chance of examining the atmospheres of a handful of these bodies. So might a new generation of extremely large ground-based telescopes, with mirrors of 30 meters or more, that have recently been proposed.

Some of the exoplanets these telescopes will attempt to study have a rare alignment. Like the more distant exoplanets identified by Kepler, they regularly pass in front of, or transit, their parent stars as seen by the detectors. During a transit, starlight filters through an exoplanet's atmosphere, with each chemical constituent leaving its own imprint on the light. The signal is extremely faint but planets in the habitable zone of M stars make frequent transits, enabling astronomers to accumulate individual observations to make a stronger detection. "The habitable zone of M stars are the first places that we can look for bio-signatures," Seager says.

South Florida - Come Cast Your Vote At An Advance Screening Of THE CAMPAIGN!!

    The Kidd?here...

Things are only going to get nastier as we head further and further into election season, closer and closer towards November.?So before we get bombarded with the dirty politics to come, why not come together and have a laugh at and watch two other horrible fictional candidates duke it out for a North Carolina House seat that, with any luck, may make our real life politics look far less outrageous?

I've got a bunch of seats to see Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell square off in THE CAMPAIGN on Monday night, August 6, at 7:30 p.m., at the AMC Aventura 24, and they're yours for the taking if you can show just a litty bit of political savvy.

For a pair of tickets, pick either Galifianakis or Ferrell, and create a campaign slogan for whoever would get your votes. Get creative in showing your support for who you feel is a better actor/comedian in your opinion or to disparage the other guy.?

In the body of the email, send your name and your campaign slogan to?Contests@AintItCool.com?with the following subject line exactly (in all CAPS):

    ROCK THE VOTE

If you're missing any of the information I'm asking for, then it's as if you don't even have an entry, no matter how good it may have been.?

Entries will be judged on their merit as they come in, and once our allotment is fulfilled by enough quality submissions to land these tickets, winners will be posted up on the site.?

If you're not sure if you're going to be able to make it though, it's quite simple - don't enter. If you don't think you can get out of work early enough, or if you have class, homework, chores, scheduled surgery, an unreliable car, prior engagements or previous commitments that may prevent you from attending this screening, don't try to win only to let these seats go to waste.?

Thanks to Warner Bros. for setting this up, and good luck to you.?

A great Bellevue electrician can help you to get your investment property off of the ground and ensure that you are positioning yourself correctly to sell this property for a profit in the future. When you are putting money into an investment property with the expectation of making a profit in the future, you want to make sure that you have the right electrician work on the technical aspect of everything that will need to be completed within this property. Having your wiring properly done and making sure that your lighting fixtures are installed and working are just some of the important things that you will need to do before putting this property on the market.

However, you also want to consider the cost that comes with obtaining an Bellevue electrician. When you pay too much to get your wiring done within this property, this would eliminate a portion of the profits that you would otherwise be able to enjoy after selling this property. In order to keep more money in your pocket, you want to use an electrician that will offer you very low prices. Since you will be able to obtain all of these services at a very minimal cost, you will be able to enjoy large profits on your investment properties. Once you see just how much money you will save, you can use this money to explore different investment properties that you may have an interest in.

While there are many electricians in Bellevue, you may want to choose the best option for getting a quality service at a limited price. When you have great electricians, you will be able to sleep because of the knowledge of knowing that your lighting has been installed correctly. Your fixtures will be placed in securely and this means that you will be able to save a lot of time that would otherwise be spent on looking over every aspect of this project.

While there are many people that enjoy micro managing every aspect of their business, you may not be one of those people. Having to look after other Bellevue Electricians is probably something that you have come across in the past. When you hire someone that can ensure your switches are installed and working correctly while troubleshooting any other electrical problem, you will be able to simply focus on what needs to be done to sell this property on the market.

There are many things that will need to come together in order to enable you to make the most money from any property that you have invested your time or money into. However, electrical services are a large portion of what it takes to get the job done correctly.

Zapp Electric, a Bellevue Electrician, is a residential and commercial electrical service company serving the greater Seattle area. For the best King County Electrician, give ZAPP a call.

If the pictures of those towering wildfires in Colorado haven?t convinced you, or the size of your AC bill this summer, here are some hard numbers about climate change: June broke or tied 3,215 high-temperature records across the United States. That followed the warmest May on record for the Northern Hemisphere the 327th consecutive month in which the temperature of the entire globe exceeded the 20th-century average, the odds of which occurring by simple chance were 3.7 x 10-99, a number considerably larger than the number of stars in the universe?

The Mystery of the Missing Chromosome (With A Special Guest Appearance from Facebook Creationists) by Carl Zimmer:

There s something fascinating about our chromosomes. We have 23 pairs. Chimpanzees and gorillas, our closest living relatives, have 24. If you come to these facts cold, you might think this represented an existential crisis for evolutionary biologists. If we do indeed descend from a common ancestor with great apes, then our ancestors must have lost a pair after our lineage branched off, some six million years ago. How on Earth could we just give up an entire chromosome?.

Are Warnings About the Side Effects of Drugs Making Us Sick? by Steve Silberman

Your doctor doesn t like what s going on with your blood pressure. You ve been taking medication for it, but he wants to put you on a new drug, and you re fine with that. Then he leans in close and says in his most reassuring, man-to-man voice, I should tell you that a small number of my patients have experienced some minor sexual dysfunction on this drug. It s nothing to be ashamed of, and the good news is that this side effect is totally reversible. If you have any issues in the bedroom, don t hesitate to call, and we ll switch you to another type of drug called an ACE inhibitor. OK, you say, you ll keep that in mind?..

As I ve been doing the last few years, I joined up with Steve Novella and other proponents of science-based medicine to do a workshop about how difficult it is to find decent health information on the Internet, and how the University of Google all too frequently puts quackery on the same level as reliable sources of medical information because all that matters for most search engines when it comes to ranking search results is the number and kinds of sites that link to a given site?..

Epic fraud: How to succeed in science (without doing any) by John Timmer:

Running scientific experiments is, frankly, a pain in the ass. Sure, it?s incredibly satisfying when days or weeks of hard work produce a clean-looking result that?s easy to interpret. But often as not, experiments simply fail for no obvious reason. Even when they work, the results often leave you scratching your head, wondering ?what in the world is that supposed to tell me?? The simplest solution to these problems is obvious: don?t do experiments?.

One Molecule for Love, Morality, and Prosperity? by Ed Yong:

Imagine a molecule that underlies the virtues that glue societies together. Imagine that it brought out the better angels of our nature with just a sniff and could rebond our troubled world. How We Changed Penguins Just by Watching by Elizabeth Preston:

If a penguin falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, I don?t know what kind of forest that is but everyone who?s interested in penguins is probably hanging out a lot closer to the South Pole. The charismatic birds let scientists and tourists alike get a close look without too much trouble. And all that familiarity has the potential to change penguins, and other closely watched animals, for good?.

What Would Happen If a Lion Fought a Tiger? by Natalie Wolchover:

This ultimate cat fight has happened more times than you might expect. The Romans pitted African lions against Asian tigers in the Coliseum, to the rip-roaring pleasure of the Plebeians. A few fights were also staged in the early decades of the 20th century, and on several modern occasions, accidental cross-species encounters at zoos have quickly developed into gruesome scenes guaranteed to scar any nearby schoolchildren for life. But how do these lion versus tiger showdowns go down??

Police: Colo. suspect planned massacre for months

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? The shooting suspect accused in a deadly rampage inside a Colorado theater planned the attack with "calculation and deliberation," police said Saturday, receiving deliveries by mail that authorities believe armed him for battle and were used to rig his apartment with dozens of bombs.

Meanwhile, new details about 24-year-old James Holmes emerged, including summer jobs the suspect held in Southern California as a camp counselor and as an intern at a prominent research institute.

In Aurora, investigators spent hours Saturday removing explosive materials from inside Holmes' suburban Denver apartment a day after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a theater minutes into a premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." The massacre left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

His apartment was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby trapped to kill "whoever entered it," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have likely been one of his officers.

Holmes received several mail deliveries over four months to his home and school and bought thousands rounds of ammunition on the Internet.

"He had a high volume of deliveries," Oates said. "We think this explains how he got his hands on the magazine, ammunition," he said, as well as the rigged explosives in his apartment.

"What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation," Oates added.

Inside the apartment, FBI Special agent James Yacone said bomb technicians neutralized what he called a "hyperbolic mixture" and an improvised explosive device containing an unknown substance. There also were multiple containers of accelerants.

"It was an extremely dangerous environment," Yacone said at a news conference, noting that anyone who walked in would have sustained "significant injuries" or been killed.

By late afternoon, all hazards have been removed from the Holmes' apartment and residents in surrounding buildings were allowed to return home, police said.

The exception was Holmes' apartment building, where authorities were still collecting evidence. Inside the apartment, authorities began covering the windows with black plastic to prevent onlookers from seeing in. Before they did, a man in an ATF T-shirt could be seen measuring a poster on a closet that advertised a DVD called "Soldiers of Misfortune." The poster showed several figures in various positions playing paintball, some wearing masks.

About 8 p.m., police left the apartment building carrying a laptop computer and a hard drive.

While authorities continued to refuse to discuss a possible motive for one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, details about Holmes' background as a student and would-be scientist trickled out Saturday.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado-Denver, where he was one of six students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money. He recently took an intense three-part, oral exam that marks the end of the freshman year of the four-year program there, but university officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns.

In a resume posted on Monster.com, Holmes listed himself as an "aspiring scientist" and said he was looking for a job as a laboratory technician.

The resume, first obtained by The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, paints a picture of a brilliant young man brimming with potential: He worked as a summer intern at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla in 2006 and mapped the neurons of Zebra finches and studied the flight muscles of hummingbirds while an undergraduate at the University of California, Riverside.

He also worked as a cabin counselor to underprivileged children at a summer camp in Los Angeles in 2008. In a statement, Camp Max Straus confirmed Holmes had worked there for eight weeks. The camp provided no other detail about Holmes but said such counselors are generally responsible for the care and guidance of roughly 10 children.

Neighbors and former classmates in California said although Holmes was whip-smart, he was a loner who said little and was easily forgotten ? until this week.

Mary Muscari, a criminology professor at Regis University in Denver who studies mass killings, said she was not surprised Holmes was studying neuroscience and mental disorders.

"It could be he was interested in that because he knows there's something different in him," she said.

Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a county detention facility Saturday, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He was set for an initial hearing on Monday and has been appointed a public defender.

Among the deceased victims was a 6-year-old girl and a man who died on his 27th birthday and a day before his anniversary. Families grieved and waited at hospitals, which reported at least seven wounded still in critical condition Saturday and others with injuries that likely are permanent.

Veronica Moser, 6, had gone to the movies with her mother, who was drifting in and out of consciousness in a hospital intensive care unit, bullets lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton said of her niece, Ashley Moser. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."

Veronica had just started swimming lessons on Tuesday, Dalton said.

"She was excited about life as she should be. She's a 6-year-old girl," her great aunt said.

Another victim, 27-year-old Matt McQuinn, was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire, said his family's attorney, Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio.

Alex Sullivan had planned a weekend of fun, first ringing in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrating his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him."

During the attack early Friday, Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the last two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over $300 on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company.

Chad Weinman, CEO of TacticalGear.com, said his company processes thousands of orders each day, and there was nothing unusual in the one that Holmes placed.

"Everything Mr. Holmes purchased on July 2 is commercially available," Weinman said, adding he was "appalled" that the material was sold to Holmes before the shooting.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. "The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings, and, according to industry estimates, roughly $75 to 77 million on that day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second-highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

SEC warns investors about self directed Individual Retirement ...

Don?t get caught up in the hype of Self Directed Individual Retirement Accounts. Let Tarkenton Financial of Clearwater show you a way to guarantee your income for retirement. Give us a call for a Free consultation that can give you peace of mind knowing you can?t out live your money.

The SEC?s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy (OIEA) and the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) are warning investors of the potential risks associated with investing through self-directed Individual Retirement Accounts (self-directed IRAs).

For its part, NASAA has noted a recent increase in reports or complaints of fraudulent investment schemes that utilized a self-directed IRA as a key feature.

What?s more, state securities regulators have investigated numerous cases in which a self-directed IRA was used in an attempt to lend credibility to a fraudulent scheme.

Similarly, the SEC has brought numerous cases in which promoters of fraudulent schemes steered investors to self-directed IRAs.

According to the SEC and NASAA, self-directed IRAs can be a safe way to invest retirement funds, but investors should be mindful of potential fraudulent schemes when considering a selfdirected IRA.

For instance, the SEC and NASAA said in an Investor Alert that investors should understand that the custodians and trustees of selfdirected IRAs may have limited duties to investors, and that the custodians and trustees for these accounts will generally not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of an investment and its promoters.

?As with every investment, investors should undertake their own evaluation of the merits of a proposal, and should check with regulators about the background and history of an investment and its promoters before making a decision,? the SEC and NASAA said in their release.

    What is a self-directed IRA?

An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a form of retirement account that provides investors
with certain tax benefits for retirement savings. Some common examples of IRAs used by investors include the traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) IRA, and Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRA. All IRA accounts are held for investors by custodians or trustees. These may include banks, trust companies, or any other entity approved by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to act as a trustee or custodian.

A self-directed IRA is an IRA held by a trustee or custodian that permits investment in a broader set of assets than is permitted by most IRA custodians. Most IRA custodians are banks and broker-dealers that limit the holdings in IRA accounts to firm-approved stocks, bonds, mutual
funds and CDs. Custodians and trustees for self-directed IRAs, however, may allow investors to invest retirement funds in other types of assets such as real estate, promissory notes, tax lien
certificates, and private-placement securities. While self-directed IRAs may offer investors access
to an array of private investment opportunities that are not available through other IRA providers, investments in these kinds of assets may have unique risks that investors should consider. Those risks can include a lack of disclosure and liquidity ? as well as the risk of fraud.

    ? Source: SEC and NASAA

    The risk of fraud

Estimates from various sources approximate that investors? hold 2 %, or $94 billion, of IRA retirement funds in self-directed IRAs.

And, according to the SEC and NASAA, the large amount of money held in selfdirected IRAs makes them attractive targets for fraud promoters. In addition, the regulators said fraud promoters also may target other types of retirement accounts by attempting to lure investors into transferring money from those accounts to new self-directed IRAs in order to participate in the fraud promoter?s scheme.

In particular, the regulators said fraud promoters who want to engage in Ponzi schemes or other fraudulent conduct may exploit self-directed IRAs because they permit investors to hold unregistered securities and the custodians or trustees of these accounts likely have not investigated the securities or the background of the promoter.

The SEC and NASAA said there are a number of ways that fraud promoters may use these weaknesses and misperceptions to perpetrate a fraud on unsuspecting investors. There are, however, ways to avoid fraud with self-directed IRAs.

Ways to avoid fraud with self-directed IRAs

Verify information in self-directed IRA account statements. Alternative investments may be illiquid and difficult to value. As a result, self-directed IRA custodians often list the value of the investment as the original purchase price, the original purchase price plus returns reported by the promoter, or a price provided by the promoter. Investors should be aware that none of these valuations necessarily reflect the price at which the investment could be sold, if at all.

Avoid unsolicited investment offers. Investors should be very careful when they receive an unsolicited investment offer. Whether from a total stranger or from a friend, trusted co-worker, or even family member, investors should ask themselves, ?Why would anyone tell me about a really great investment opportunity??

Investors also should be especially wary of an unsolicited investment offer that promotes the use of a self-directed IRA. As noted above, fraud promoters may attempt to lure investors into transferring money from traditional IRAs and other retirement accounts into new self-directed IRAs in order to participate in the fraud promoter?s scheme.

Ask questions. Always ask if the person offering the investment is licensed and if the investment is registered, then check out the answers with an unbiased source, such as the SEC or your state securities regulator. The SEC has a short publication called ?Ask Questions? that discusses many of the other questions investors should ask of anyone who wants them to make an investment.

Be mindful of ?guaranteed? returns. Every investment carries some degree of risk, and the level of risk typically correlates with the return an investor can expect to receive. Low risk generally means low yields, and high yields typically involve higher risk. Fraud promoters often spend a lot of time trying to convince investors that extremely high returns are ?guaranteed? or ?can?t miss.? Don?t believe it. High returns represent potential rewards for investors who are willing and financially able to take big risks.

Ask a professional. For complex investment opportunities, particularly those which involve the opening or creation of a new account outside a traditional financial institution or well-recognized broker, investors should consider getting a second opinion from a licensed unbiased investment professional or an attorney.
