GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - The holiday shopping may be over but many of us are now left facing the bill.
With all the extra spending, some people are entering the New Year with new debt.
The 2011 holiday shopping season gave a boost to retailers, but many people were spending money they don't have.
"One of the things we like to see in the economy as a whole is a lot of spending, unfortunately from an individual, personal level, a lot of spending is not so great,? said financial advisor Bill Pratt.
He says the biggest problem is people aren't budgeting.
In fact, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, the majority of Americans have no clue where all they spend their money each month.
"January, they pull their statement up for the first time and look at the credit cards and it's unbelievable. Especially the small things like, I don't remember eating out that often, but if you don't budget at all you don't realize how much you've spent,? said Pratt.
So how can you can you tackle that holiday debt?
Pratt breaks it down into 3 steps:
1) Stop spending.
"If you received cash or gift cards, use those for impulse spending but use the rest of your income for paying off things you've already purchased,? he says.
2) Get organized - keep track of what you are spending each month and know exactly what you owe, and who you owe it to.
3) Keep making payments, so you don?t build up any more interest. Pratt advises taking them on one by one.
"Start making an extra payment or an extra amount of money towards a payment of one card and then once you've eliminated that credit card, you can take the money and use it towards the next and so forth,? he says. ?You just want to make sure your controlling your spending instead of credit cards controlling you at the first of the year."
Pratt also recommends keeping track of your credit report. You can do that for free here.

Scientists have found at least one instance when the smaller sibling gets to call the shots and cancer patients may one day benefit.
The protein Chk1 has long been known to be a checkpoint in cell development: it keeps normal cells and damaged cells from dividing until their DNA has been fully replicated or repaired. Now scientists at Georgia Health Sciences University and the California Institute of Technology have discovered a shorter form they've dubbed Chk1-S ("S" stands for short) that essentially neutralizes its longer sibling so cell division can proceed.
That shorter form is in higher levels in cancer cells as well as fetal tissue, both of which require accelerated cell division. But the scientists also have shown that very high levels of Chk1-S actually reduce tumor growth and prompt premature cell division and death in other cells.
"Chk1 is needed for division of all cells, even cancer cells, so if you inhibit it completely by over-expressing Chk1-S, those cells also will not grow," said Dr. Navjotsingh Pabla, a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech. Chk1-S expression is nearly zero in normal, non-dividing cells.
These findings, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, point toward the short form's potential to help diagnose and/or treat cancer, they said. Chk1 inhibitors, which promote abnormal cell division ? and likely cell death ? to occur before DNA replication/repair is complete, already are being tested on patients.
"Chk1-S is only expressed at a time when DNA is replicated or repaired so it binds to its sibling protein, Chk1, antagonizing it so now the cell can divide," said Dr. Zheng Dong, cell biologist at GHSU and the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta. "The question that has been hanging on for many years is: How is Chk1 regulated?"
They found that significantly increasing levels of Chk1-S induces cell division regardless of whether DNA replication or repair is complete. Incomplete DNA replication or repair can result in spontaneous cell suicide but also can result in chromosomal or genetic defects leading to cancer cell production. Additionally, cancer cells purposefully mutate to resist treatment. Pabla speculates that expression of the shorter version may be awry in cancer cells. "We are very interested in pursuing that."
"It's exciting to have found an important regulator of such an important protein that we think may contribute to cancer as well as its treatment," Dong said.
Chk1 and Chk1-S are made by the same gene they are just spliced differently. One way Chk1 gets turned on is by phosphorylation, or adding phosphate, which can activate or deactivate a protein. The level of phosphorylation of Chk1 is particularly dramatic when DNA repair is needed. Chk1, in turn, works to temporarily halt the cell cycle by phosphorylating another protein. Interestingly, Chk1-S cannot bind to its sibling when Chk1 is phosphorylated. It's known that mental retardation can result from mutation of ATR, a DNA damage-sensing protein that phosphorylates Chk1.
While the biggest burst of cell division occurs during development, it continues lifelong in areas such as the blood, skin and gastrointestinal tract where cell turnover is high. "Lots of tissues need to regenerate," said Dong.

Some of the volunteer firefighters at the Knights Landing Fire District have shaved their heads to show support for Chief Rachel Olson, center, who was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer in November. (Matthew Henderson/Democrat)
Not even cancer could stop Rachel Olson from trying to serve her community.Olson, the fire chief of the Knights Landing Fire District who does CSI-type work at the Yolo County Sheriff's Department as her primary job, was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer in mid-November. Since then, she's taken a leave of absence from working with the sheriff's department but continues to do administrative work with the volunteer fire department.
While Olson says she's progressing real well, the process of not being able to work full time did not settle well with her at first.
"My job's a big part of my life," said Olson, a 1992 Woodland High School alumna who has worked at the sheriff's department for the last 13 years. "I enjoy serving the community."
Olson, a Knights Landing resident who has been with the local fire department for 15 years, including the last two as chief, has received a lot of help from the community and her peers since she was diagnosed.
On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Woodland Fire Department is hosting a pancake breakfast to raise funds for Olson to financially assist and ease her recovery process. There is no set cost for the meal. All donations will be accepted. All proceeds go to the Chief Rachel Olson Medical Relief Fund.
The fundraiser is being held at Woodland Fire Station No. 3, located at 1550 Springlake Court, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Sausage, eggs and potatoes will also be served.
Donations can also be made to Rachel Olson, Yolo Federal
Credit Union account No. 70578, or by sending funds to KLFD, PO Box 578, Knights Landing, Calif., 95645.A big screen TV donated by the Yolo County Deputies Sheriffs' Association will be one of the prizes up for grabs in a raffle.
"No words can say how thankful I am for everybody supporting me," Olson said, "from my coworkers, to the other fire departments and the sheriff's office."
Four of the Knights Landing volunteer firefighters and two from Esparto have even shaved their heads to match Olsen's new hair style.
"It's amazing to see how much people come together," Olson said. "Everything was thrown at me as a surprise."
Back in November, Olson was having trouble eating as food was getting caught in her throat. On Nov. 14 she went to see a specialist and shortly after was informed that doctors had spotted a tumor.
"It was a shocker when I found out," she said. "I went in for a medical observation and I came out with a whole different journey ahead of me."
That journey includes chemotherapy, undergoing radiation and a tentative surgery in February. By August, Olson hopes to be back to work at the sheriff's department.
"That's the game plan right now," she said.

"Even in the absence of an express legal requirement, Microsoft expects event organisers and participants to exercise common sense and good judgment when alcoholic beverages are served at social events. Food should be served along with alcoholic beverages, participants should manage their level of alcohol consumption [and] event sponsors should ensure that alternative forms of transportation are available. Any participant who becomes inebriated should be prevented from consuming alcoholic beverages and from operating a vehicle," Microsoft stated in an email to staff members.
Microsoft isn't telling their staff not to drink, but to "enjoy themselves, but not too much."
An incident came to light back in September of this year where Simon Negus, Microsoft's former UK second in command, was fired in 2010 after he allegedly kissed a co-worker at a company party in Atlanta and then lied about it when Microsoft conducted an investigation.
Negus was also accused of "flirting [with] and touching" that co-worker, Toni Knowlson. Negus also asked another co-worker to "flutter her eyelashes." On top of all that, Negus also asked another woman, Martina Redmond, to stand on a chair so that he could admire her short skirt. Microsoft fired Negus, but was unable to prove the sexual harassment allegations.
Negus accused his former boss, Gordon Frazer, for getting him fired and fostering a "culture of debauchery" at Microsoft. Negus alleges that "drunkenness and outrageous misbehaviour were rife" during an annual company sales conference. "The alcohol made freely available in unlimited quantities included neat vodka which could be drunk from an ice fountain, and a very strong German liquor called Jagermeister," Negus stated.
