NBC to break even, not lose money on Olympics

(AP) ? Viewer excitement about the Olympics is translating into gold for NBC: The broadcaster now expects to break even on the London Games rather than take a loss.

"We are way ahead of where we thought we'd be," NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said Wednesday.

Covering the Olympics was more challenging for NBC this year because of the time difference with Europe. With London five hours ahead of New York, NBC isn't able to show any events live in prime time. In Beijing four years ago, NBC was able to show morning events such as Michael Phelps' gold-medal swims live during its evening broadcasts.

But instead of the expected 20 percent ratings plunge compared with Beijing, Burke said, NBC is seeing audiences up 9 percent so far, five days into the event.

"We think that is because of the way we promoted the Olympics during the hundred days leading up to the Olympics," Burke said.

Tuesday's Olympics telecast, featuring Phelps' record-setting swim and the gold-medal performance of the U.S. women's gymnastics team, had the highest rating of any night so far, according to Nielsen's overnight measurement of the nation's largest cities. A broader viewership estimate was expected later Wednesday.

Combined with higher production costs in London, NBC had expected at one point to take a $200 million loss for the games. NBC paid $1.2 billion for the rights to show the games on TV and online in the U.S.

Before the games opened, NBC said it sold more than $1 billion in ads, breaking the record of $850 million set during the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It got 10 percent more for every minute of prime-time advertising compared with Beijing. It also tripled its pre-sales of online ads to $60 million, as it's streaming all events live for the first time.

The company's bet that live streaming wouldn't cut into prime-time television audiences appears to have paid off.

Better ratings could mean higher rates for ads sold at the last minute. Time Warner Inc., which owns TNT, TBS, CNN and other cable channels, said Wednesday that it has seen a slowdown in last-minute ad sales partly because advertisers are shifting money to the Olympics instead.

The bigger audience could also help NBC, which is fourth overall in U.S. ratings, promote new shows in its fall lineup and boost viewership of non-sports programs such as "Today" and "NBC Nightly News" during the Olympics.

The Olympics run through Aug. 12.

NBC is showing the Olympics on its main broadcast network, the Spanish-language Telemundo and the cable channels CNBC, MSNBC Bravo and NBC Sports Network. It also created specialty channels devoted to basketball and soccer and one for 3-D. The main network is broadcasting more than 270 hours of the Olympics, the most ever.

Burke indicated that he expected to break even from a cash perspective, meaning the cost of the broadcast rights and the production will be balanced by ad sales and other direct revenue. He made the comments on a conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss the second-quarter earnings report of Comcast Corp., NBCUniversal's parent company.

From a formal accounting perspective, the treatment of the Olympics is more complicated, as NBC made the deal with the International Olympic Committee before the Comcast bought the controlling stake in NBCUniversal early last year. Some of the loss was eliminated when Comcast absorbed NBCUniversal through what is known as purchase accounting.

Comcast Chief Financial Officer Michael Angelakis said on the call that the end result would be that the company will post a small gain from the event in the current quarter. That doesn't mean the games will be profitable. Rather, it reverses the losses previously accounted for.

NBC lost money on the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, but previous games were profitable, if not wildly so. It has broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988.

Last year, NBC outbid Fox and ESPN to gain the rights for four more Olympics, paying $4.38 billion through 2020.

Dodgers shut out by D-backs in Victorino's debut

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:45 p.m. ET Aug. 1, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Patrick Corbin was brimming with confidence as he began his third stint this season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, convinced that he belonged with the big club on a permanent basis.

His solid outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers only confirmed that notion.

The 23-year-old left-hander pitched two-hit ball over six innings following his promotion from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, and the Diamondbacks got home runs from Miguel Montero and newcomer Chris Johnson in a 4-0 victory that completed their first three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium since 2007.

"I feel a lot more comfortable now and I feel like I should be up here," Corbin said. "That's the biggest difference - feeling comfortable and going out there knowing you can pitch against these guys."

Corbin (3-4) struck out five and walked two in his sixth major league start.

"I'd say he was a little bit excited. It's a big series, so the adrenaline goes a little bit faster. So he was probably trying a little bit too hard," said Montero, the Diamondbacks' catcher. "He was trying to be too perfect early in the game and was pulling the ball a little bit. But when he got in jams, he made quality pitches to get out of them. Then he settled down a little bit and pitched good the last three innings."

Corbin, who began the season with Double-A Mobile, made five starts for Arizona earlier this season with a 4.15 ERA. In the last one, he gave up two runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Dodgers at Chase Field on May 21. The Diamondbacks sent him to Reno for six starts, then recalled him and used him out of the bullpen for two weeks. Then it was back to Reno for three more starts - which Corbin hopes will be his last ones in the minors.

"My breaking ball was a good pitch for me coming up through the minor leagues, and I didn't have it my first time up here," he said. "But I gained it back when I was in the bullpen and then continued with it in Reno. Today I was throwing it for strikes, getting ahead of guys and then finishing them with it."

The Dodgers' only hits were a two-out single by Matt Kemp in the first inning and a two-out single by rookie pitcher Stephen Fife in the second. They were outscored 19-4 in the series, which followed a three-game sweep at rival San Francisco.

"This series scared me from the beginning," said manager Don Mattingly, who categorized it as a "trap series" before Friday night's opener. "They hurt us with the long ball all three games and we weren't hitting the ball."

Montero opened the scoring in the second with an RBI single and made it 4-0 in the eighth with his 13th homer, a two-run shot off reliever Randy Choate. Montero's three RBIs raised his season total to 64, the most among catchers.

"But right now I'm not satisfied. I'm never satisfied. I always expect more out of myself," Montero said. "The first two months were my worst months, pretty much, but it's not how you start. It's how you finish."

Shane Victorino was 0 for 4 in his Dodgers debut in left field, a day after he was acquired from Philadelphia during the final hours before the non-waiver trade deadline.

It was a homecoming of sorts for the two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, who was selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 1999 draft but never got to play for them until Wednesday. Mattingly switched to uniform No. 12 so Victorino could have his familiar No. 8. He became the eighth player Mattingly has used in the leadoff spot this season, and the ninth to start in left field.

"You always want to get to the team that drafted you in the big leagues," Victorino said. "Now I get to wear Dodger Blue again - not as a young kid, but as a guy who has had time in the big leagues, has had some fun and some great moments. I'm trying to relive those moments here."

Fife (0-1) allowed two runs and six hits over 4 1-3 innings, a year to the day after the Dodgers acquired the 25-year-old right-hander in a multiplayer trade with Boston. He has yielded four runs in 16 1-3 innings during his three big league starts, but has walked three batters in each one.

A heads-up baserunning play by Paul Goldschmidt helped the Diamondbacks score their first run after he singled on Fife's first pitch of the second inning. Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis made a sensational, diving grab of Justin Upton's bunt after sprinting about 30 feet to the left of the plate, but Goldschmidt got to second after tagging up, and Montero singled him home.

"I saw Justin square around - I wasn't expecting that - and then I saw it go foul. So I figured I better go back and tag because, if he makes a diving play, then I can make a run for it," Goldschmidt said. "I took a few hard steps and I saw he was kind of off balance, so I just put my head down and kept going."

Johnson made it 2-0 in the fourth with his 10th homer. In three games with the Diamondbacks after being acquired from Houston on Friday, he is 6 for 11 with seven RBIs - including a grand slam against Aaron Harang in the series opener - and has been on base eight times in 13 plate appearances. Johnson is 11 for 22 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his last six games overall.

NOTES: Goldschmidt was 8 for 11 with five RBIs in the series, including first-inning homers in each of the first two games. ... Two-time All-Star Bobby Abreu was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Victorino.

McLaren Automotive ? one year on | Autocar

It's easy to forget that in creating the MP4-12C, McLaren also created a new car company: McLaren Automotive. Setting up a production facility, supply network and a dealer network in addition to a new car that has to take on a rival as strong as the Ferrari 458 Italia is some challenge.

A year down the line, I paid a visit to McLaren's James Bond-style headquarters in Woking to see how one of Britain?s newest car companies is shaping up.

The order books seem healthy. More than 1100 MP4-12C coup?s have been delivered through 38 dealerships in 22 countries. Three of those dealerships are in the UK ? London's Knightsbridge, Warwick and Manchester ? and the home market is tipped to settle as McLaren?s third biggest from 2013 after the US and Germany.

Indeed, more than half of all McLarens in the future are expected to be sold in the US, up from?40 per cent in the early days of trading.

McLaren ultimately aims for 70 dealerships, with the biggest market launch yet to come being China. And with McLaren?s stated aim being to sell 4000 cars a year following a new model launch every year until then, success in China will be essential in achieving that goal.

And now with the 12C Spider, dealers have a second model to sell. So far, more than half of the orders for the drop-top have come from existing MP4-12C coup? owners. The company says this is encouraging, because it shows the McLaren ownership experience is a positive one.

Others are buying Spiders in addition to the coup? and not trading in. But those coup?s that are being traded in are currently being geared up to enter into a new McLaren Approved Used Car scheme that?s likely to be launched by the end of the month. Protecting residuals is McLaren?s latest challenge in starting a car company from scratch.

It?s British buyers who are ordering more 12C Spiders than any other market, the terrible weather of this summer clearly doing nothing to dent Britain?s love of open-top motoring.

As for production, McLaren is currently building around seven to eight cars per day at the McLaren Production Centre. Production peaked at around 11 cars per day at the start to meet launch demand, but is now expected to settle at its current rate after the Spider launch.

And the common MonoCell chassis that underpins both coupe and Spider means both can be built alongside one another on the same line at any ratio.

Who?s buying the MP4-12C? A lot are being bought to complement car collections, but there are those being bought for everyday use. Some American buyers are doing as many as 1000 miles per month in their MP4-12Cs.

McLaren buyers are also getting a say in how the current and future products develop. The recent round of revisions for 2013 to the MP4-12C ? including the option for more engine noise to be played into the cabin and a button to release the doors in place of the current swiping system ? were all born out of customer feedback. Maintaining this level of personal service is another challenge as McLaren?s volumes increase.

Perhaps the most interesting growth part of McLaren?s business is with its mysteriously named McLaren Special Operations. The department was responsible for maintaining F1s and SLRs but now has added customising MP4-12Cs to its job description.

The number of customers going beyond the standard option list has risen from an initial one in 10 to around 15 per cent now, but is expected to reach one in four by the end of the year. Requests have ranged from special stitching for the steering wheel to the installation of a coffee machine.

The ?200,000 and above MP4-12C is now the norm as a result of the bespoke work of McLaren Special Operations.

So an eventful first 12 months. And the next? Spiders will be delivered before the year is out, and it?s highly likely the next McLaren we?ll see as part of the 'new model every year' strategy will be the F1 replacement, which has been regularly spied. Can this be the car to go one better than the MP-12C and topple a Prancing Horse?

Affordable Web Hosting Helped Drive Internet Explosion

In the early days of the internet, having a web site was an expensive proposition with some companies choosing to stay offline due to the cost. It was not unusual for owning the domain name to cost a couple of hundred dollars without having it available online. However, as more businesses rushed to the information highway, affordable web hosting brought the internet within financial reach of nearly everyone.

As prices for servers dropped within range of nearly business, affordable web hosting became more popular leading the charge of internet business. The ability to communicate with customers and provide online financial transactions through affordable web hosting made businesses see the future in online business. Today, being able to host a web site for a reasonable price has also allowed families to host personal websites at a very affordable cost.

While many free hosting companies still provide a valuable service, the use of third-party advertising turns many away from their use. Free hosting services will usually have an extended domain name that also drives customers away that want to have their individual online identity. Free forum hosting, when added to affordable web hosting allows business and personal visitors to a site to communicate with each other and can help drive interest in the site among a wide range of users.

Keeping Business Active Helps Sustain Future

Most businesses will go through cycles during which their income levels are not consistent. The use of an affordable web hosting company can help them plan their budget and contain the cost of doing business. Once the agreement is in place for affordable web hosting, there are no worries about increases in rent and utilities for the online business that often affects traditional brick and mortar locations.

Remaining available for visitors is often greatly improved by using an affordable web hosting company as opposed to some of the cheaper or even free hosting services. There are also no outside advertisements included in the agreement for affordable web hosting, allowing the site owner to have complete control over the content of the site.

Designing the site and keeping it updated is often a concern for many online business owners, since many do not have the knowledge to perform these tasks. Many of the affordable web hosting companies offer deep discounts for their subscribers to help them build their site and keep it fresh. This may cost a little more, but is often worth the extra money if it keeps their online presence looking clean, neat and organized.

Another hiccup? Romney's foreign trip not smooth

GDANSK, Poland (AP) ? It wasn't supposed to be this way.

Mitt Romney outraged Palestinians on Monday, stirring fresh controversy on his visit to Israel just days after insulting the British on what was intended as a feel-good visit to the Olympics in London.

Whether or not the trip changes votes back home, the effect hasn't seemed to be what Romney's presidential campaign had in mind.

His first steps onto the world stage as President Barack Obama's Republican challenger were carefully crafted to avoid political risk. He visited countries that are staunch U.S. allies, limited questions from the media and arranged made-for-TV appearances at symbolic venues in London and Jerusalem. It was all intended to demonstrate he was ready to handle foreign affairs smoothly and lead during dangerous times.

Instead, as he made his final stop of a three-nation tour in Poland late Monday, Republicans and Democrats alike were shaking their heads in the U.S. Though Republicans said they saw no lasting harm, Democrats raised questions about Romney's ability to handle delicate topics with sensitivity on foreign soil, even under the friendliest conditions.

Romney's latest trouble stemmed from a speech he gave to Jewish donors in which he suggested that their culture was part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians. Kind words for Israel are standard for many American politicians, but Palestinian leaders suggested his specific comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East.

Romney's campaign later said his remarks were mischaracterized.

"Because it's billed as a layup ? it's billed as something that should be simple ? perhaps he let his guard down," said Hogan Gidley, a senior aide under former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum. "You say, 'Gosh, this guy is so scripted, the campaign is so disciplined, so smart, how could this happen?'" Still, he doubted that Romney would suffer any long-term effects among voters who are still undecided three months before the election.

Predictably, Obama's campaign was more critical, with senior strategist David Axelrod saying on Twitter: "Is there anything about Romney's Rolling Ruckus that would inspire confidence in his ability to lead US foreign policy?"

It's unclear whether voters in the U.S. are paying attention to Romney's stumbles, especially as concerns about the nation's economy dominate most Americans' concerns.

"I'd say it has the same impact as a stubbed toe," said Iowa Republican John Stineman, a marketing consultant in Des Moines. "People are still focused on the economy."

And Debra Hayes, a Republican-leaning independent from Denver, said Romney's overseas comments have no impact on how she'll vote.

"I'm interested only in the economy - jobs, and the prices of things," said Hayes, who is undecided. "We need to stand with Israel. And our president needs to show leadership overseas. But things are going downhill at home, and that's what matters."

And Romney drew his share of favorable media coverage back home. A speech on Israel policy, delivered at dusk against the scenic backdrop of Jerusalem's Old City, drew praise for its setting and delivery. He and his wife, Ann, appeared relaxed and engaged in an interview on CNN, where Ann Romney described her husband as loving and emotionally engaged.

Still, missteps in the past week have fueled opponents' contentions that the former businessman and Massachusetts governor is out of touch with the nation and the world he hopes to lead.

As the trip got under way, Romney caused a stir in Britain by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared to host the Olympic Games. The dispute overshadowed his efforts to highlight his personal experience leading the Salt Lake City Games a decade ago. Instead, Romney was widely assailed by the London media and criticized by British leaders.

Then on his first day in Israel, Romney distanced himself from an adviser's suggestion that he would "respect" a decision by Israel to launch military action to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

On Monday at a fundraiser, opened to the media after the campaign first said it would be closed, Romney shared a sentiment he sometimes talks about on the campaign trail in the United States and repeats in his book, "No Apology." But his decision to highlight cultural differences in a region where such differences have helped fuel violence for generations prompted new questions about his diplomatic skills ? and enraged Palestinian leaders.

Comparing economic output per capita in Israel and "just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority," he declared that "you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality." He was speaking to about 40 wealthy donors at the King David Hotel, which is within sight of the Palestinian territory on the West Bank.

He said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between other neighboring countries, including Mexico and the United States.

Palestinian leaders quickly objected.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "It is a racist statement, and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation."

"This will cause a lot of damage to American interests," he said.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the comments "were grossly mischaracterized."

The campaign added that Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities ? the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador ? shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and the Palestinians.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said, "One of the challenges of being an actor on the international stage, particularly when you're traveling to such a sensitive part of the world, is that your comments are very closely scrutinized for meaning, for nuance, for motivation."

Earnest sidestepped questions about whether Obama agreed with Romney's comments about culture, saying only that Obama believed economic issues are among the matters that would need to be addressed by the Israelis and Palestinians during any peace talks.

Romney flew on to Poland for two days of visits with leaders.

He met with the Cold War-era Solidarity leader Lech Walesa in Gdansk, earning his endorsement: "I wish you to be successful because the success is needed to the United States, of course, but to Europe as well and to the rest of the world, too. So, Governor Romney, get your success, be successful," Walesa said through a translator.

Walesa suggested Romney's leadership was needed to restore America's position in the world.

Romney is to meet with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Tuesday before delivering his final foreign policy speech of the trip.

The Romney campaign hopes Walesa's backing will influence Catholics and labor union members in the U.S. But Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, told reporters Monday that the Polish visit "is nothing more than a superficial diversion and a desperate attempt to pander to Polish Americans and Catholics across our country."

Romney's visit to Poland was not without controversy.

Campaign officials said the visit with Walesa came at his invitation, but the current leadership of Solidarity distanced itself from the event and issued a statement critical of Romney. Solidarity characterized Romney as being hostile to unions and against labor rights. It emphasized that it had no role in organizing Romney's visit and expressed support for American labor organizations.
