In to-day's news it is reported that over 35% of UK residents will holiday at home this year, a growth of over 10% on 2010. It will be interesting to see how big an increase we get in numbers to our beautiful island. I hope our Tourism chiefs are drawing in the crowds, as the TV coverage last year has done for our TT visitor numbers. I don't think we will fill Douglas beach but ........

Don't hold your breath. Stay at home means stay at home and coming to the IOM is not staying at home. It costs a lot extra in travel which I'm presuming is some of the cost that UK families are trying to save. Why come to the Isle of Man with a family of four from say Birmingham, when you could travel to Wales or Scotland easier and cheaper with just as beautiful countryside and more choice in attractions?

If a family save the ?300 steam packet ticket for the car and 4 that's extra spending money for their week.

I met a guy once that actually holidays in Ramsey (he lives down south). He used to like fishing off the end of the stone pier. Not sure if he still comes to Ramsey as there's not really anywhere to stay now aside from a few Guest Houses...

That is a real shame. We strolled down to the pier and along the seafront to the harbour mouth to watch the Red Arrows the other day. We then walked around the harbour, over the bridge and along the promenade to the Mooragh Park. I was watching our mini family memmbers in the play area and looking across the busy lake towards the green hills beyond. Turning round there a wonderful view of the sea and headlands. It all looked absolutely stunning. I thought then that Ramsey was a real gem.

If you arrive via the mountain or the Laxey coast road, the views on the drop down into Ramsey are a feast for the eyes.

A good hotel would let others stay here and enjoy the north.

Although not in Ramsey there are many farms which do B&B in the north of the rock.

I've heard that fishing is not as good as it was when I was a creating havoc there ~45 years ago.

Many years ago, my grandfather who lived in Port St Mary also used to go to Ramsey for holidays. We have no holiday plans this year either - maybe I could go for a holiday for Port Erin - nice beach, nice pubs, nice people - seems like a good plan.

I think you are missing a large point here. hint: read the business pages of a UK national newspaper and get a quote for a family to come here via the SR.

It's a bit more than that imho. Sure you check out IOM accommodation prices and they all seem quite reasonable. Then the cost of The Racket makes your eyes water. The point being that this is an additional cost as compared to going somewhere like Devon. And that county benefits from some excellent scenery, restaurants, accommodation etc etc which helps to put the IOM into perspective.

Not that I care atm. The annual selfish staycation week fishing at Emberton Country Park kicks off on Friday.

IMO it's not just the cost of the Racket (which can be reasonable when booked for the right time of year) but the unreliability of the travel:

    • FlyeBe delays / cancellations for 'technical reasons',
    • Frustrating security at Ronaldsway,
    • The Racket's boats not sailing for whatever reason - gearbox broke, can't find the maps etc.
    • Heysham!
And then as you say compare the Island's offerings to south-west England (or the Lake District or...). A mate of mine in Cornwall tells me he and others are booked out solid until next summer, if you want two weeks next summer then good luck!
