ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - ?I?m a survivor, and I thank God I?m still here.?
That?s a sentiment shared by Trallis Jennings of St. Louis and most-likely the rest of the 4900 breast-cancer survivors who took part in Saturday?s Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure.
Jennings was diagnosed in 2006 and attended her fifth race?this year, ?It?s a society, a sisterhood we?re all a part of. The feeling today is an awesome feeling, a one-ness.?
Patty Schwartz of Alton, Illinois took a chartered bus to the event in support close friends who?ve had the disease, ?Seeing those survivors cross the finish line is so wonderful. Hopefully, they?ll find a cure so everybody can walk over that line.?
The 2011 Komen St. Louis Race For the Cure drew nearly 64,000 participants and raised more than $2.3 million. Three-quarters of that amount stays local for the fight against breast cancer.
Lois Knapp of Quincy, Illinois walked in Saturday?s event to celebrate forty years of being cancer-free. She underwent a radical mastectomy?at age 29, with three young children at?home, ?My baby was a year old and I was in the hospital. But, I haven?t missed a birthday since.?
For the fourth year in a row, St. Louis-based Wells Fargo Advisors served as the chief sponsor of the race. Nearly 3,000 employees and friends participated and raised nearly $105,000 for the local Komen affiliate.
Wells Fargo Advisors President and CEO Danny Ludeman walked among the crowd and was awed by the amount of pink he saw, ?The pink ribbons and memorabilia serve as a symbol, but when people come together like this, they turn that symbol into reality. I?ve never seen a community quite like St. Louis. They come together, they rally. And they truly do it because they care.?
Komen St. Louis Executive Director Helen Chesnut says, ?The generosity of Wells Fargo Advisors and the impact it has on those who are breast cancer advocates, survivors, and their families is truly extraordinary. We?re grateful to the leadership team and employees there for their commitment to making a difference in St. Louis.?
